Australia pledges support to Lanka in its efforts to mitigate climate change issues

The Australian government had assured its fullest support especially technical cooperation to mitigate climate change related issues, Environment Ministry Secretary, Dr. Anil Jasinghe said.

Dr. Anil Jasinghe said that the Australian Climate Action Plan would extend the same relief to other countries as Sri Lanka.

He said that Acting Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Amanda Jewell had assured the Australian government’s support in that regard during a discussion held on Friday.

The 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP-26) will be held in Glasgow next month. In particular, the preparations of the Governments of Sri Lanka and Australia for the Summit and the proposals to be presented by the two countries at the Summit were discussed.

The Secretary said that a high level technical delegation representing Sri Lanka would be participating in the COP-26 Summit. Dr. Jasinghe said that Sri Lanka was one of the least greenhouse gas emitting countries in the world.

 Speaking on the occasion, the Acting High Commissioner stated that Sri Lanka will also benefit from the Australian Government’s Climate Action Plan for Cooperation with Other Countries. She spoke about the Climate Action Plan prepared by the Australian Government and the international cooperation it provides to the rest of the world.

Dr. Anil Jasinghe called on the Australian Government support to Sri Lanka’s efforts to reduce and adapt measures to control greenhouse gas emissions.
