I never imagined I would be writing this posthumous Appreciation of my niece Anusha Navaratne, President’s Counsel, whom as a toddler I wheeled about in the pram. Such, though, are the sad vagaries of life.Despite her recurring illnesses, Anusha never wavered from her professional commitments. She was deeply attached to her friends and relatives as well, especially to her parents, caring for them at every opportunity. She also made regular offerings to the charities.

Our own meetings were limited in later years as I was mostly away. Yet we did meet now and then, both at home and abroad. She would, on my visits home, update me on the current socio-political situation there; and often too, in good humour, correct some of my own views, which she thought needed urgent revision! Yet, she would never let me leave without an assortment of parting gifts she had bought for me – gifts which now remain a sad reminder of a life gone too early.

We used to meet abroad as well, both when she was reading Law in London and when she was touring Europe with her late parents, my sister Anula and my brother-in-law Asela Navaratne. Together we have, among other places, roamed the length & breadth of Britain and the icy expanses of Scandinavia. She could, on these travels, come out of her disciplined legal mindset to blend happily, even playfully, with the Nature around her; and also compare, insightfully and with humour, the novel social features she encountered with those back at home.

Anusha had an enduring faith and belief in the hereafter, which comforted her when she was ill. My loving hope is that she has come now to a sublime realm of her spiritual longing, to dwell in peace and harmony for all time to come.
