Acceptance of nominations for 14 Nov. general election underway

Election officials yesterday began accepting nominations for the upcoming parliamentary election, scheduled for 14 Nov. 2024, according to Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake.Ratnayake said that nominations would be accepted at the District Secretaries’ offices in 22 electoral districts until noon on 11 October.

Registered political parties were not required to place deposits for contesting general elections, Ratnayake said.

“However, independent groups need to place deposits amounting to Rs. 2,000 per candidate,” he said.President Anura Kumara Dissanayake issued an Extraordinary Gazette on 24 Sept. 2024 officially declaring the parliamentary election date.

Sri Lanka’s Parliament consists of 225 members, with 196 elected through direct votes and the remaining 29 appointed via the National List, based on the proportion of votes each political party or independent group secures in the general election.

The last general election was held in 2020. (RK)
