Africa backs Infantino as CAF unanimously votes in FIFA president’s favour

The Confederation of African Football’s Executive Committee has unanimously confirmed its support for beleaguered FIFA president Gianni Infantino, at odds with its counterparts in Europe, North America and Asia.

On the day UEFA said it is committed to boycotting future World Cups at all levels while Infantino remains in office, CAF’s top decision-making body late on Thursday sided with the FIFA president as he seeks re-election in March next year.

CAF makes up 54 of FIFA’s 211 member associations, and is a powerful voting bloc that has largely supported Infantino since he took office in 2016.

“The CAF EXCO unanimously reconfirmed its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino and thanked him for his support for African football over ‌the years,” CAF said in a statement.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe welcomed FIFA’s pledge to review the processes that led to the controversy which caused the fiercest revolt of Infantino’s tenure as national federations complained they had been sidelined over the abandoned proposal to sell a slice of the World Cup’s commercial future.

“CAF welcomes and endorses the “Joint Update” by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom,” Motsepe said, but stressed the need for good governance and transparency in global football.

“We are committed to continue working together with FIFA, its member associations, other football Confederations and stakeholders to safeguard and adhere to governance, due process, and transparency global best practises and to contribute to the development and growth of football worldwide.”

CAF’s support will provide some relief to Infantino, who has faced near-global condemnation for his aborted plan to establish the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) and sell commercial rights to the World Cup.

Earlier this week, five of Africa’s most influential football leaders issued statements in support of Infantino, while also welcoming the decision to drop his controversial plan to sell a stake in future World Cup revenue.

CAF vice president Fouzi Lekjaa from Morocco and fellow FIFA Council members Hany Abo Rida (Egypt), Hamidou Djibrilla (Niger) and Ahmed Yahya (Mauritania) all pledged to support Infantino.

Veron Mosengo-Omba, recently elected president of the football federation in the ‌Democratic Republic of the Congo and former CAF general secretary, also lent his voice in support.

Motsepe was also effusive in his praise for Infantino days before the World Cup sell-off scandal broke.

“I personally support Gianni Infantino,” he ‌said. “He’s ‌not just a good friend. He’s a loyal friend. He’s loyal to Africa. I come from a background where when people have been loyal to you, you never stab them in the back.”

FIFA itself issued a statement on Wednesday fully backing Infantino.

Shree Charani, Prema Rawat spin Pakistan out for 55 in one-sided contest

Harmanpreet Kaur celebrates with Deepti Sharma (Cricinfo)

Pakistan were bowled out for 55, their lowest total in T20I cricke.  A collapse where they lost six wickets for eight runs in 29 balls set them so far back that they couldn’t even bat out 20 overs. Harmanpreet Kaur, who broke new ground by becoming the first player – male or female – to lead her team 150 times in T20Is, had the time of her life celebrating each wicket and eventually scoring the winning runs as well.

Shree Charani shines

Old-fashioned left-arm spin is having a resurgence. India men have found Manav Suthar. India  women already had N Shree Charanin. The No. 1-ranked T20I bowler in the world picked up two wickets in her first over on Saturday.

The flight on the ball drew Gull Feroza out of her crease. The drift in had her looking leg side. The dip and the turn resulted in a leading edge and a simple catch to point. The bowler did everything right. The batter did everything wrong. Shawaal Zulfiqar was the only Pakistan batter to put any kind of pressure on India. Charani had her lbw for 14 off 14 and from there it was a procession.

Pakistan’s batting troubles

Playing their 200th T20I, Pakistan went from 27 for 0 to 35 for 6 before the innings was halfway done. They could not find a risk-free way to score runs, absorbing long periods of dot balls and trying to get out of it by playing low-percentage shots, often against the turn, on a Dubai pitch that was offering plenty of it. Only the openers got to double digits and only Zulfiqar was able to score a run a ball.

Rawat’s support act

Prema Rawat finished with figures of 4-0-9-3. Nineteen of her 24 balls were dots. All of that is remarkable considering she is a legspinner, whose release points tend to be just shy of the perpendicular. Like Shane Warne. From there, they turn their wrist over and it can either be awesome or awful. Rawat’s release point is perpendicular, maybe even beyond it, like Rashid Khan’s. And she doesn’t turn her wrist. For the most part, she just flicks the ball out the front of her hand. This gives her better control at the cost of big turn and in T20Is, that trade-off is well worth it. Nobody could hit Rawat off her line and length and when Sadaf Shamas tried, she got bowled off her pads.

In the lead-up to this game, Deepti Sharma said India were one step ahead of Pakistan. The events on the field backed that up. Pratika Rawal dropped two catches. It didn’t matter. Deepti herself almost fumbled a run-out but the mix-up between Eyman Fatima and Umm-e-Hani was so bad that there was still time to recover the ball, break the stumps and secure the wicket. The good thing for Pakistan is they are still in the running for a semi-final spot. All they need to do is beat Hong Kong. But this kind of batting will almost certainly let them down if it continues in the knockout stages.

A simple enough chase

India suffered an early wobble with aFatima Sana picking up two wickets in the second over, including Shafali Verma, who brought up 3000 T20I runs. Smriti Mandhana also fell to the Pakistan captain in a slightly contentious lbw decision. The ball, from over the wicket, looked like it was pitching just a shade outside leg stump but with no DRS in use at this tournament, it could not be confirmed one way or the other. Harmanpreet and Deepti finished the game off with seven wickets and 68 balls to spare.

Scores:

India Women 57 for 3 in 8.4 overs  (Shafali Verma 12, Harmanpreet Kaur 18*, Deepti Sharma 12*; Fatima  Sana 3-17) beat Pakistan Women in 18.1 overs  55 (Muneesha Ali 13, Shawal Zulfiqar 14, Shafali Verma 1-10,   Shree Charani 3-07,  Deepti Sharma 2-05, Prema Rawat 3-09)  by seven wickets

‎Rumesh Tharanga created history in emphatic fashion, winning the men’s javelin at the Diamond League Final in Brussels to become the country’s first Diamond League champion.

‎The recently crowned Commonwealth champion sealed the prestigious Diamond Trophy with a superb third-round throw of 89.04 metres, producing yet another major performance on the biggest stage.

Tharanga became the first Sri Lakan to win a top position at a global competition conducted under the auspice of World Athletics.

‎The victory also extended Tharanga’s extraordinary run of form, giving him his 12th victory in his last 13 competitions. His only defeat during that sequence came earlier in the season, underlining the consistency that has made him one of the outstanding performers in world javelin this year.

‎Tharanga’s winning effort was enough to keep a determined international field at bay, with Poland’s Dawid Wegner producing a lifetime best of 87.47m to take the silver medal. Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott completed the podium in third place.
