Sajith pitches into police for overstepping their authority in the Trinco temple incident

Published

on

Opposition and SJB Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday accused the police of overstepping their authority during Sunday’s tense standoff at the Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi Bodhiraja Vihara, in Trincomalee, warning that such conduct risked inflaming communal sensitivities.

Raising the issue in Parliament, Premadasa cited Chapter Two of the Constitution, noting that while Buddhism is afforded the foremost place, the provision also safeguards the rights of all other faiths. He stressed that the temple, established in 1951, and formally registered with the Department of Buddhist Affairs in 2010, functioned legally as a recognised place of worship.

Premadasa condemned police involvement in issuing directives on where Buddha statues should be placed and how Dhamma school buildings should be constructed, arguing that such interventions lie outside police authority and could heighten ethnic and religious tensions. Any disputes, he said, should be referred to the Mahanayakes of the three Buddhist orders for guidance.

“Sending police to disrupt development activities is unacceptable. Under whose authority were these orders issued?” he asked. “If the government does not understand the supreme law of the land, the Constitution, it should read it again.”

He also criticised the Speaker for not allowing Opposition MP Dayasiri Jayasekara from raising related concerns, describing the move as a suppression of democratic rights.

The confrontation erupted when a group of monks attempted to place a Buddha statue at a Dhamma school within the temple grounds. A video, later shared on social media, showed a monk asserting that the site was of religious heritage value. However, authorities report that the land falls under the Coast Conservation Department, which has lodged complaints over unauthorised activity. Police further state that the land is currently subject to a court order, prohibiting any form of development.
