Showers expected in the Sabaragamuwa,Western, North-western, Uva, Northern and Eastern provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts

Issued at 05.30 a.m. on 18 July 2025  by the Department of Meteorology

Showers will occur at times in the Sabaragamuwa province and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts while several spells of showers may occur in the Western and North-western provinces.  Fairly heavy falls about 50 mm are likely at some places. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Uva, Northern and Eastern provinces during the afternoon or night.

Strong winds of about (40-50) kmph can be expected at times over Western slopes of the central hills and in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-western and North-central provinces.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The Heat index, the temperature felt on the human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Northern, North-central, North-western, Eastern provinces and in Hambantota and Monaragala districts during the daytime.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.

Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED

Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.

Showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

Due to the low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, the prevailing showery condition over the island is expected to continue during the next few days

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and in Kurunegala district during the early hours of the morning.

Showers are likely in the Eastern and Northern provinces during the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur at most places of the island after 1.00 pm. Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
