Indians overstaying visas caught at Rajagiriya to be deported
Police have launched an investigation to identify the local contacts of 22 Indian nationals who were arrested on Wednesday (10) after spending approximately three months in Sri Lanka.
Authorities are working to determine the nature of their interactions and associations during their stay, as part of an ongoing probe into their activities while in the country.
The Indians were arrested by officers attached to the Department of Immigration and Emigration’s Investigation Unit for residing illegally in Sri Lanka, under expired visa permits.
They were taken into custody from an office complex at Rajagiriya.
According to officials, the group had arrived in the country approximately three months ago. Among them, 17 had entered on tourist visas, four on resident visas, and one individual on a business visa.
Authorities carried out the arrests based on information uncovered during a sudden interrogation of two suspicious Indian nationals by the Immigration Investigation Unit.
The individuals are between 25 and 35 years of age.
They are currently being held at the temporary detention centre at Mirihana, and would be deported, police said.
