Courtroom killing: Udaya points to IGP’s lapses
Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) Leader Udaya Gammanpila yesterday alleged that there had been a conspiracy to kill Ganemulle Sanjeewa at the Hulftsdorp court complex.
Referring to Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya’s recent revelation that the police had refrained from producing Sanjeewa in the Gampaha court, the previous day, following intelligence report of a possible attempt on his life, the former Minister said that the police chief owed an explanation.
Addressing the media at his Pita Kotte office the former parliamentarian demanded to know why the police and prison authorities produced him in court on 19 February.
The former Minister emphasised that the police chief couldn’t have been unaware of the serious threat to Sanjeewa’s life.
The ex-Minister said that he didn’t have faith in the Secretary to the Public Security Ministry, retired senior DIG Ravi Seneviratne, conducting a proper probe into the lapses and negligence on the part of the IGP.
He said that knowing how Seneviratne had failed to act on specific advance intelligence on the 2019 Easter Sunday carnage there was no point in expecting him to do the right thing. (SF)
