Indian boost for Northern Province police: eighty single cabs worth Rs 300 mn
In a bid to enhance mobility of law enforcement officers deployed in the Northern Province, India would provide vehicles for police stations in that region, authoritative sources said.
The following is the text of the Indian HC statement issued on January 15: “India’s people-centric development cooperation initiatives, based on the needs of the people of Sri Lanka and the priorities of the Government of Sri Lanka, are making a tangible difference to the daily lives of the people in all the 25 districts of the country across sectors such as housing, health, education, fisheries, transport, renewable energy, livelihood sustenance, agriculture, among many others.
Adding yet another chapter to these development assistance initiatives, a Memorandum of Understanding on ‘Supply of Single Cabs for use in Police Stations in Sri Lanka’, with grant assistance from Government of India to the tune of SLR 300 million, was signed and exchanged by High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka H.E. Santosh Jha and Secretary, Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Mr. D.W.R.B. Seneviratne on 15 January 2025.
The signing ceremony was also attended by Mr. Priyantha Weerasuriya, Acting Inspector General of Police, as well as senior officials from the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Sri Lanka Police and Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.
The project entails supply of at least 80 single cabs, spare parts and accessories to the police stations in Northern Province of Sri Lanka, which will address a vital requirement of Sri Lankan Police related to enhancing safety of the citizens and maintenance of law and order.”
