F.R. Lindsay-White, Vice Chairman of the Used Motor Spare Parts Importers’ Association (UMSIA), says that none of the association’s members are connected to the recent confiscations of illegally assembled vehicles reported across the country.

Speaking at a press conference in Nugegoda on Wednesday, White said that the individuals behind these illicit activities are not affiliated with UMSIA. He accused non-member groups, in collaboration with corrupt political figures and government officials, of engaging in illegal practices such as the trafficking of spare parts and the importation of “bat vehicles”—illegally assembled cars. White called for immediate legal action against those involved.

“While the existing laws in the country are sufficient to tackle these issues, corrupt politicians and officials are exploiting these laws to facilitate the illegal importation of vehicles,” White said.

“Our association is closely monitoring the government’s efforts to enforce the law, and we expect decisive action.”

White also addressed concerns about corruption within the importation process, revealing that some officials demand bribes during spare parts imports, which are then passed on to consumers. He expressed frustration at the limited ability of his association to counter these corrupt practices.

Reflecting on past government practices, White recalled that a government official previously accused of corruption had engaged in discussions with the association on these issues. However, despite these talks, White stated that neither the association nor the public saw any tangible action from the former government.

He also called for an investigation into the importation of luxury vehicles under the previous administration, alleging that certain groups had exploited vehicle imports, bringing in high-end cars at inflated prices. White pointed out that due to unnecessary trade agreements, vehicles were purchased at prices up to 300% higher than their actual value.

“The association has urged the current government to address these inflated vehicle prices and investigate the trade agreements that allowed this to happen,” White said. The press conference was also addressed by Buddhika de Silva, President of UMSIA, along with several other association officials.

Ranawaka accuses govt. of using JVP cadres and police to suppress political opponents

… reminds AKD led over 560 protests during Yahapalanaya

Former Yahapalana Minister and United Republican Front (URF) leader Patali Champika Ranawaka yesterday (19) alleged that the JVP, which carried out over 560 protests during the 2015-2019 period, was now bent on preventing the Opposition from exercising its democratic right to protest.

Recalling the declaration made by the JVP at the height of the violent protest campaign in July 2022 that it would set the Parliament ablaze, the former parliamentarian lashed out at the JVP-led administration for using the police excessively to curb political opposition. Ranawaka said this while addressing the media at the former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s Flower Road Office .

Commenting on the protest campaign launched by the Maha Sangha, demanding presidential pardon for General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Ven. Galagotaatte Gnanasara, the ex-Colombo District lawmaker alleged that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake used a combination of police, investigative units and JVP cadres to break up the monks’ protest. The government went to the extent of compelling the JVP/NPP-run Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) to deprive the peaceful protesters of basic toilet facilities, he alleged.

The government’s actions proved that only those with prior approval from JVP Pelawatte headquarters could launch protests in Colombo, its suburbs or in the provinces. The police have become a political tool in the hands of the JVP, the ex-Minister said. (SF)

At the onset of the regular weekly briefing, Prof. Peiris said that he would report to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) today (20) morning as requested by the commission. “The CIABOC wanted to record my statement regarding a meeting I chaired at the ministry after the conclusion of the war in 2009 pertaining to an ongoing investigation.”
