Bargain hunters exploit share price drop in blue chip counters

The stock market yesterday was marginally up because of the heavy engagement of bargain hunters in the market who exploited the price drop in mainly blue-chip counters, market analysts said.
Amid those developments both indices moved upwards. The All Share Price Index went up by 3.5 points while the S and P SL20 rose by 5.3 points. Turnover stood at Rs 1 billion with a crossing. The crossing was reported in Commercial Bank which crossed 1.7 million shares to the tune of Rs 130 million; its shares traded at Rs 80.
In the retail market companies that mainly contributed to the tune were; Commercial Bank Rs 229.3 million (2.8 million shares traded), JKH Rs 157 million (983,000 shares traded), NTB Rs 113 million (1.1 million shares traded), Sierra Cables Rs 54.4 million (6.7 million shares traded), HNB Rs 36.2 million (230,000 shares traded), Grain Elevators Rs 26.9 million (174,000 shares traded) and Sampath Bank Rs 183 million (270,000 shares traded).During the day 29.1 million share volumes changed hands in 7100 transactions.
It is said that high net worth and institutional investor participation was noted in JKH, Richard Pieris & Company and Alliance Finance Company. Mixed interest was observed in HNB, Commercial Bank and Chevron Lubricants, while retail interest was noted in Industrial Asphalts, Browns Investments and Hela Apparel Holdings Rights.
The Capital Goods sector was the top contributor to the market turnover (due to JKH and Richard Pieris & Company), while the sector index lost 1.36 percent. The share price of JKH decreased by Rs. 3 to hit Rs. 161. The share price of Richard Pieris & Company moved down by 50 cents to dip to Rs. 20.
The Banking sector was the second highest contributor to the market turnover (due to Commercial Bank NTB and HNB) while the sector index decreased by 1.56 percent. The share price of HNB lost Rs. 2 to reach Rs. 157. The share price of Commercial Bank recorded a loss of Rs. 1.30 to hit Rs. 80.40.
Yesterday, the rupee opened slightly stronger at Rs 300.40/60 to the US dollar, dealers said. Bond yields were significantly up, they said, and stocks opened up 0.39 percent.
The rupee closed at Rs 300.60/75 against the greenback on the previous day. In the secondary market trading was subdued ahead of the bond auction scheduled for the previous day. A bond maturing on 15.12.2026 was quoted at 11.40/60 percent, up from 11.30/50 percent. A bond maturing on 01.07.2028 was quoted at 13.30.45 percent, up from 13.00/20 percent.

A fresh chapter for the George Keyt Foundation: A renewed commitment to the Sri Lankan art ecosystem
The George Keyt Foundation (GKF), dedicated to preserving the legacy of modernist painter George Keyt and fostering local art, has announced strategic appointments to its leadership team, bringing together a mix of global academic expertise, corporate leadership, and artistic passion. Establishment of the New Advisory Committee
To broaden its operational reach and deepen its engagement with the global art market, the George Keyt Foundation has established an Advisory Committee. The newly appointed committee members include:
• Dr Sujatha Meegama is a Senior Lecturer in Buddhist Art History at the Courtauld. She is an acclaimed art historian, author and academic, bringing specialised knowledge in South Asian art history to guide the foundation’s curatorial and educational directives.
