Sri Lanka shot out for 157 at Bull Ring

Ruan van der Merwe at Wanderers

Not many Asian teams want to play at the Bull Ring. It’s not only one of the quickest wickets in the world alongside WACA in Australia, the high altitude of Johannesburg – 5750 feet –makes life difficult for players. The Wanderers is fondly known as the Bull Ring for its intimidate nature.

The Sri Lankans – depleted and moral down – after four who featured in the opening game being ruled out with injuries – shouldn’t lose hope though as far better teams have come to the Bull Ring and  have eaten humble pie.

The only bright spot in the innings after they won the toss and opted to bat first was Kusal Perera, who batted superbly to post 60 runs off 67 balls with 11 fours.

Incidentally, it happens to be the highest score by a Sri Lankan here and only captain Dimuth Karunaratne had managed a half-century before Perera. This is Sri Lanka’s third Test match at the Bull Ring.

After the early dismissal of Karunaratne (19), Perera along with Lahiru Thirimanne had added 52 runs for the second wicket. Perera was doing all the scoring and with him picking up boundaries frequently, there were some worries among the Proteas.

But Wiaan Mulder provided the breakthrough to settle nerves. Mulder is not the typical South African fast bowler with outright pace. His strength is building up the pressure through disciplined seam bowling and he got the better of Perera who drove loosely and was caught at gully.

In the same over he dismissed Kusal Mendis for a duck and in the next over picked up Thirimanne for 17 and the Sri Lankans were in disarray.

Minod Bhanuka on debut showed his inexperience when he attempted to drive the last  ball before lunch for four. But Anrich Nortje has that extra yard of pace and the bounce at Bull Ring is far more genuine than his home ground – SSC.

Mulder’s opening spell of three overs fetched him three wickets for just one run. He had set the stage for Nortje to dominate. His pace was too quick and the Sri Lankan tail couldn’t handle him.

Nortje finished with six for 56, the fourth best figures by a South African quick against Sri Lanka.

Brief Scores:

Sri Lanka 157 all out in 40.3 overs

(Kusal Perera 60, Wanindu Hasaranga 29, Dushmantha Chameera 22, Anrich Nortje 6/56, Wiaan Mulder 3/51)

South Africa 148 for 1 in 37 overs

(Dean Elgar 92, Rassie van der Dussen 40)

Muhammad Shazad has broken the record for the fastest first-class century by a Pakistani batter, reaching the mark in just 49 balls.

The right-hander smashed eight sixes and 12 fours in his innings of 114 off 62 balls for Pakistan Television  against Kingsmen Academy at the Diamond Cricket Ground in Islamabad on the opening day of the third round of the President’s Trophy.

This is Shahzad’s sixth first-class century in 21 matches. Batting at No. 5, he walked out when PTV were struggling at 34 for 3 and struck a 143-run stand with Mohammad Taha, who made 43. Shahzad has also played 22 List A matches and 26 T20s. He made his PSL debut for Islamabad United in the 2025 season, playing six matches.

Misbah-ul-Haq previously held the record for the fastest first-class century by a Pakistan batter for his 56 ball effort  against Australia in the second Test at Abu Dhabi in 2014. Misbah, at the time, levelled Viv Richards’ record for the fastest Test century. But that record was broken two years later by Brendon McCullum, when he made a 54-ball century against Australia in Christchurch in the second Test of the series.

Shahzad has come through the PCB’s age-group programme, playing for Pakistan’s Under-16 and Under-19 sides. He played in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup in South Africa.

Right-arm wristspinner Arab Gul,  took 4 for 8 on T20I debut and left-arm spinner Nangeyalia Kharote  picked up 3 for 19 as Afghanistan successfully defended a modest 129  against Japan   to open their Asian Games men’s competition  campaign with two points in Group A.

Two days after nearly beating India  in a rain-shortened game in Sano, hosts Japan made a steady start to the chase and reached 53 for 2 in the eighth over before losing their way.

Gul did much of the damage, taking two wickets apiece in the 12th and 14th overs as Japan slid from 60 for 4 to 63 for 8. Abdollah Ahmadzai and Kharote then finished off the lower order, with Japan bowled out for 81 in 19.3 overs.

Asked to bat first, Afghanistan had posted 129 for 6, with Mohammad Akram making 34, captain Darwish Rasooli 29 and Karim Janat 21.

But it was Mohammad Ishaq’s unbeaten 25 off 17 balls from No. 6 that provided the late impetus after Japan had kept Afghanistan to under six an over for the first 15 overs. Right-arm seamer Shoma Sugaya-Slater and offspinner Ibrahim Takahashi took two wickets apiece for Japan.

The two sides have games against Nepal lined up in Group A. The top two teams from the group will proceed to the quarter-finals.

Scores:

Afghanistan 129 for 6 in 20 overs  (Mohhamad Akram 34, Karim Janat 21, Darwish Rasooli 29,  Mohammad Ishaq 25*; Reo Sakurano Thomas 1-05,  Shoma Sugaya-Slater 2-18, Ibrahim  Takanashi 2-19) beat Japan 81  in 19.3 overs (Reo Sakurano- Thomas 23, Kendel Kadowwaki Fleming 14, Benjamin Ito Davis 17; Arab Gul 4-8, Abdullah Ahmadzai 2-13, Nangeyalia Khan 3-19, Najibullah Zadran 1-07 ) by 48 runs

North Korean weightlifter Ri Song Gum has broken three world records en route to winning gold in the women’s 49kg (108lbs) competition, which saw India’s Mirabai Chanu win an elusive Asian Games medal by finishing second.

Ri gave North Korea its first gold of the games in Nagoya, Japan, on Wednesday, joining an elite club of four weightlifters who have won three Asian Games gold medals.

The 28-year-old hauled 94kg above her head in the opening snatch discipline – the first official segment of the competition where athletes lift a barbell from the floor to an overhead position in a single motion. The lift was 1kg heavier than the previous world record of 93kg.

Ri followed it up by breaking the world record twice in the 115kg clean and jerk – a two-part movement where a barbell is lifted from the floor to the shoulders and then pushed overhead. The 4ft-7in (139.7cm) weightlifter hoisted 116kg and 121kg above her head.

Ri’s total lift of 215kg obliterated the old world record total by 7kg.

She is the fourth lifter, and first woman, to win three Asian Games weightlifting golds and joined Iran’s Mohammad Nassiri (1966-74), South Korea’s Kim Tae-hyun (1990-98) and Iran’s Behdad Salimi (2010-18), who all won three gold medals. No athlete has won four weightlifting gold medals.

In the same category, India’s Chanu finally won an Asian Games medal at the third time of asking. She won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

The 32-year-old is India’s most decorated weightlifter, with three Commonwealth gold medals and a silver to her name, along with multiple global titles.

She lifted a total of 198kg after a snatch of 87kg and a clean and jerk of 111kg, while Indonesia’s Diana Tri Wijayana took bronze with a total of 191kg, comprising 88kg and 103kg.

Chanu’s silver also ended India’s 28-year wait for a weightlifting medal at the games since Karnam Malleswari won silver in 1998.
