Grama Niladharis on warpath, threaten strike

Grama Niladharis (GNs) are scheduled to launch a protest week from today (12) with a two-day strike action on the cards.

Co-President of the GN’s Alliance Nandana Ranasinghe told The Island yesterday that Grama Niladharis countrywide would withdraw from duties on August 12 (Monday) and August 13 (Tuesday).

Black flags would be hoisted opposite the GN offices countrywide during the week as a sign of protest against the government’s failure to address the problems related to their profession, Ranasinghe said.

He said the Cabinet had approved a specified salary scheme for Grama Niladhari officers, but the government was delaying its implementation. The GNs only receive a monthly allowance of around Rs. 600 to carry out duties in the village, and the State Minister of Public Administration had appointed an allowance committee to look into the matter. “Seven months have passed since the committee submitted

recommendations to the subject Minister, but the government is yet to implement the recommendations,” Ranasinghe said, adding that they were also against the arbitrary gazetting of the Grama Niladhari Service minute.

The association is scheduled to lodge a complaint at the Human Rights Commission against the gazette this morning.

Issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology
at 3.30 p.m. on 22 March 2026, valid for 23 March 2026.

The Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in
Anuradhapura, Mannar and Vavuniya districts.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.

Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.
