Showers will occur in Western, North-western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya districts

Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 31 July 2024 by the Department of Meteorology 

Showers will occur at times in Western, North-western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm are likely at some places.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Badulla, Ampara and in Batticaloa districts in the evening or night.

Strong winds of about (50-55) kmph can be expected at times over the  Western slopes of the central hills and in Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee, Monaragala and Hambantota districts. Fairly strong winds about (30-40) kmph can be expected at times elsewhere of the island.

Winds will be westerly to south-westerly in the sea areas and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph.

Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu and Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle and up to 60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be rough at times while the sea areas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu, and Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle can be fairly rough at times.

Naval and fishing communities are requested to be attentive in this regard.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Uva, Central and Eastern provinces and in Polonnaruwa district after 2.00 p.m. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in the Uva and Eastern provinces. Several spells of showers will occur in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
