Lanka Phosphate Ltd experienced a notable decline in its gross turnover for the financial year 2022/2023, the company’s annual report presented to Parliament on Wednesday (24) showed. The report has revealed that the gross turnover for the 2022/2023 financial year was 546 million rupees, a significant decrease from the 741 million rupees earned in the 2021/2022 financial year.

Additionally, the company recorded an operating loss of 48.6 million rupees, marking the first such loss in two years. This downturn has been attributed to a 50 percent drop in sales due to decreased fertiliser usage in the country.

The report also highlighted the company’s inability to implement planned automation and introduce new technologies to the production process, citing lack of funds and liquidity issues as major obstacles.

In response to these challenges, the company has recognised the need for a more soluble type of phosphate fertiliser for short-term crops and announced steps to manufacture Single Super Phosphate (SSP).

The Eppawala Phosphate deposit, discovered in 1971, is estimated to contain 60 million metric tons of phosphate. Lanka Phosphate Ltd produces around 50,000 metric tons of Eppawala Rock Phosphate (ERP) annually, along with High-Grade Eppawala Rock Phosphate (HERP).
