Man who tried to delay presidential contest pays Rs 500,000 as cost

Attorney-at-law Aruna Laksiri, who filed a Fundamental Rights petition against the holding of the Presidential election, paid the Rs. 500,000 yesterday as legal costs in line with the directive issued by the Supreme Court recently. The order was made after the dismissal of his petition.

Laksiri sought to have holding of the presidential election suspended pending a referendum on the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

The Supreme Court three-judge-bench consisting of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justice Arjuna Obeysekera and Justice Priyantha Fernando on July 15 dismissed Laksiri’s petition, ordering him to pay legal cost of Rs. 500,000. The Supreme Court declared that there was no legal basis to proceed with the application.

MDH Jayawardena MV Honors Retired Teachers

A special Teacher Appreciation Ceremony was organised by the Past Pupils Association of MDH Jayawardena Maha Vidyalaya, Battaramulla, recently, at the school playground, to honour the retired teachers of the college . Forty two past teachers were felicitated by the
alumni of the school. Concurrent to the event, a cricket tournament was organised by the PPA where teams representing different batches of Ordinary Level students of the past vied for honours for the B.N.E de Thissera trophy.

Heat Index at Caution Level in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and Monaragala district

Issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology at 3.30 p.m. on 10 March 2026, valid for 11 March 2026.

The public are warned that  the Heat index, the temperature felt on the human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at
some places in the  Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in Monaragala district.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.


Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.
