Showers likely in eight districts

Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 12 March 2024 by the Department of Meteorology

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the morning.

A few showers are likely in Ampara, Batticaloa and Hambantota districts during the morning while showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Colombo, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Galle and Matara districts in the evening or night. Mainly dry weather will prevail in the other areas of the island.

Winds will be north-easterly in direction and wind speed will be (20-30)kmph. Wind speed may increase up to (40-45) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota can be fairly rough at times.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the early hours of the morning.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern, Eastern, Central, North-central, North-western and Uva provinces. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in the Central, North-western and Uva provinces. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere after 2.00 p.m.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Showers will occur at times in the Northern, Eastern, Central, North-central and Uva provinces  Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm are likely at some places in these areas.  Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the  Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces and in Kaluthara district after 2.00 p.m.

Fairly strong winds of about 40 kmph can be expected at times over Eastern slopes of the central hills, and in Hambantota, Monaragala and Ampara districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused bytemporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the early hours of the morning.

Showers will occur at times in the Uva province and in Ampara, Batticaloa, Matale, Nuwara-Eliya and Polonnaruwa districts. Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm are likely at some places in these areas. Several spells of showers will occur in Northern province and in Kandy, Anuradhapura and Trincomalee districts. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Sabaragamuwa province and in Galle, Matara and Kaluthara districts after 2.00 p.m.

Fairly strong winds of about 40 kmph can be expected at times over Eastern slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Hambantota, Monaragala and Trincomalee districts.
