Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 21 February 2024 by the Department of Meteorology

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces during the morning.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Kalutara, Galle, Matara and Rathnapura districts in the evening or night. Mainly fair weather will prevail elsewhere.

Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be (25-30) kmph. Fairly strong winds about 30 kmph can be expected at times in eastern slopes of the central hills and in North-central, North-western, Uva, Southern and Eastern provinces and in Matale and Kandy districts.  Wind speed may increase up to (40-45) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota and from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota and from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam can be fairly rough at times.

The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Showers are likely in coastal areas of the Western and Southern provinces during the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur in most parts of the island after 1.00 pm. Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm are likely at some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and North-central provinces.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, Sabaragamuwa, and  North-western provinces and in Monaragala district during the day time.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.


Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.
