Fairly heavy showers likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces.

Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 30 January 2024 by the Department of Meteorology

Showers will occur at times in Eastern, North-central and Uva provinces and in Mullaitivu, Matale ,Hambantota and Nuwara-Eliya districts and at several places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Galle, Matara and Kandy districts after 2.00 p.m. Fairly heavy showers about 75 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces.

Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be (20-30) kmph. Wind speed may increase up to (45-50) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Mannar via Puttalam.

The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Eastern provinces during the morning.

Showers or thundershowers will occur in Western and North-western provinces and Galle and Matara district in the morning and at most places of the island during the afternoon or night. Fairly heavy rainfall of about 75 mm is likely at some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, Eastern and Southern provinces.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued an Advisory for Severe Lightning for the Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces and in Hambanthota district.

The advisory issued at 02.00 p.m. today [07 April 2025]  is valid for the period until 11.00 p.m. 07 April 2025

The public are warned that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several places in for Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces and in Hambantota district. There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.

ACTION REQUIRED:

The Department of Meteorology advises that people should:

Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
• Avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms.
• Avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms.
• Avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc.
• Beware of fallen trees and power lines.
• For emergency assistance contact the local disaster management authorities.
