The Maradana Police took swift action to settle a dispute on Tuesday evening to prevent railway workers going on strike after a woman police sergeant assaulted a locomotive operator at the Maradana Railway Station. The WPS attached to the Police Cultural Troupe allegedly assaulted the engine driver of a train scheduled to ply from Colombo to Beliatta for his failure to stick to the time table.

Witnesses have said that the WPS was seen assaulting the drive. Soon after the assault railway workers threatened to launch a strike, and people informed the Maradana police of the incident. Officers of the Maradana police rushed to the station and arrested the WPS and requested the rail workers to resume work.

Both parties were summoned to the police later and the WPS was released on police bail with the consent of the victim.
