Government to expedite education reforms
At a press conference held at the Presidential Media Centre on Tuesday (12), under the theme Collective Path to a stable country, Minister of Justice, Prisons Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Special Committee tasked with Providing Recommendations for the Expansion of Higher Education Opportunities in Sri Lanka, emphasized the pressing necessity of formulating a national government policy to enhance the quality of education in Sri Lanka.
He also highlighted the current demand for vocational training in the country and advocated that institutions offering such education should receive recognition on par with universities.

HC postpones delivery of verdicts against ex-Dy. Minister Sarana
The Colombo High Court yesterday postponed the delivery of verdicts in four corruption cases filed against former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
The verdicts, which were scheduled to be delivered on 30 April by Colombo High Court Judge Mohamed Mihail, have been deferred to 26 May 2026.
The cases filed by the CIABOC allege that Gunawardena for causing financial losses to the State in 2006 during his tenure as Chairman of the National Lotteries Board.
The charges relate to the leasing of vehicles for the institution.

Two excise officers granted bail in attempted assault case
Kandy Additional Magistrate Nalaka Sanjeewa Weerasinghe yesterday (30) ordered the release on personal bail of Rs. 100,000 each two Excise officers charged with threatening and attempting to assault a businessman in Marassana, within the Thalathuoya Police area, while allegedly claiming to be on official duty.
The suspects are attached to the Gampola Excise Office.
Thalathuoya Police, who conducted the investigation, produced the suspects before court and reported the available evidence, based on a complaint lodged by a businessman from Marassana, Y.M.U.K. Seneviratne.
The Magistrate ordered the suspects to reappear in court on 01 October, when the case will be taken up again.
Attorney-at-Law Tharuka Heenkenda appeared on behalf of the complainant.

Gnanasara Thero granted bail after indictments served over Islam remarks
Indictments were served before the Colombo High Court yesterday against Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero over an allegedly derogatory statement about Islam.
Following the service of indictments, the court ordered that Ven. Gnanasara Thero be released on bail.
