Parliament announces schedule for Second Week of July: Key Bills and debates on the agenda
The schedule for the second parliamentary week of July has been determined, according to Kushani Rohanadeera, Secretary General of Parliament. The Committee on Parliamentary Business, chaired by Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana, the Speaker, finalized the agenda on July 7th. Parliament is set to convene from July 18th to July 21st. Each day, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., time has been allocated for Questions for Oral Answers.
The session will commence on Tuesday, July 18th, at 9:30 a.m. At this time, a debate is scheduled on the Resolution under the Customs Ordinance published in Gazette Extraordinary No. 2325/07, as well as the Regulations under the Imports and Exports (Control) Act published in Gazette Extraordinary No. 2335/26. This will be followed by the Adjournment Debate on the Difficulties Faced by the Palestinian People at Present, initiated by the Opposition, from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday, July 19th, will feature the Committee Stage of the Anti-Corruption Bill and the Assistance to and Protection of Victims of Crime and Witnesses Bill from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. After the Government Business, the Second Reading of the Private Member’s Bill Heart to Heart Trust Fund (Incorporation) Bill is scheduled to take place. Questions at the Adjournment Time will then be entertained from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
On Thursday, July 20th, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Second Reading of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Bill will be discussed. Following that, the Resolution under the Essential Public Services Act is expected to be approved without debate. The Government will present a Motion at the Adjournment Time from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The session on Friday, July 21st, will see the Second Reading of the Banking (Special Provisions) Bill debated from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Questions at the Adjournment Time will then be addressed from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CEYPETCO) has announced a reduction in the prices of Petrol 92 and Petrol 95, effective from midnight today (30).
The price of Petrol 92 has been reduced by Rs. 15 per litre, from Rs. 414 to Rs. 399 while the price of Petrol 95 Octane has been reduced by Rs. 20 per litre, from Rs. 495 to Rs. 475
There will be no change in the prices of diesel, Super Diesel and kerosene under the latest revision.
The book “Rathuwewi Mihimadala”, written based on the life story of Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Leader of the Democratic Left Front, was launched on Friday [August 28] at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo, with the participation of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
Speaking to the media afterwards about Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya stated:
“Vasudeva Nanayakkara is a prominent figure in Sri Lankan politics, particularly within the left-wing political movement. There were several influential figures within the left movement, and that left-wing influence also contributed to bringing the country to where it is today. Politically, there were areas where we agreed and areas where we did not. However, I have great respect for the contribution made by Vasudeva Nanayakkara to left-wing politics. When I entered Parliament in 2020, Vasudeva Nanayakkara was also in Parliament. We sat in the same row, and we spoke about many important as well as interesting moments in his political career. I believe some of these experiences have also been included in this book.”
The event was attended by members of the Maha Sangha, Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara, former President Maithripala Sirisena, former Speakers Karu Jayasuriya and Chamal Rajapaksa, as well as party members, family members and friends.
