Light showers in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts

Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 11 July 2023 by the Department of Meteorology

Several spells of light showers will occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Showers may occur in the Northern and Eastern Provinces and in Polonnaruwa district during the morning.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Uva province and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the evening or night.

Winds will be south-westerly and speed will be (20-30) kmph.  Wind speed may increase up to (40-50) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil and in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be fairly rough at times.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the  Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-central provinces and in Badulla and Kurunegala districts during the early hours of the morning.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Galle, Matara, Kaluthara and Rathnapura districts after 2.00 p.m. 
Mainly fair weather will prevail elsewhere in the island.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The prevailing showery condition over the island is expected to be temporarily reduced from 08 to 11 February.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle, Matara and Badulla districts during the early hours of the morning.

A few shower may occur in the Uva province and in Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, Ampara, Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa districts.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts after 2.00 p.m.

Fairly strong winds about (30-40) kmph can be expected at times over the Eastern slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Matale, Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Advisory for Severe Lightning
Issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre  at 12.00 noon 07 February 2026 valid for the period until 11.00 p.m. 07 February 2026

Thundershowers accompanied with severe lightning are likely to occur at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa province and in Galle and Matara districts.

There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.

ACTION REQUIRED:

The Department of Meteorology advises that people should:
 Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
 Avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms.
 Avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms.
 Avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc.
 Beware of fallen trees and power lines.
 For emergency assistance contact the local disaster management authorities.
