The 2023 men’s ODI World Cup will begin on October 5 in Ahmedabad, and matches will be held across ten venues, and culminate in the final – also in Ahmedabad – on November 19. The semi-finals will be held in Mumbai and Kolkata on November 15 and 16.
The 45 league matches and the three knockouts will be played in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune over a span of 46 days. The two semi-finals and the final will all have reserve days. There are six day league matches in the tournament, which will start at 10:30 am IST. All other matches will be day-night games starting at 2:00 pm IST.
The ICC has confirmed that if India qualify for the semi-finals, that game will be held in Mumbai, unless their opposition is Pakistan, in which case the game will be played in Kolkata.
The format will be the same as it was in 2019, with ten teams playing each other once in the league phase and the top four qualifying for the semi-finals. India qualified for the event as hosts, while Afghanistan, Australia, England, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Pakistan, and South Africa made it by finishing in the top eight of the 2020-2023 World Cup Super League. The remaining two teams will be identified at the ongoing World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe, which is being contested by Sri Lanka, West Indies, Ireland, Nepal, Netherlands, Oman, Scotland, UAE, USA and Zimbabwe.

South Korea’s former defence minister Kim Yong-hyun, who claimed responsibility for the president’s failed attempt to place the country under martial law last week, has tried to take his own life, an official said.

Authorities found him while making the attempt in his detention centre on Tuesday night, Shin Yong-hae, the justice ministry’s correctional agency chief, told lawmakers.

In the wake of Yoon’s shock martial law order, Kim resigned last week along with other top presidential staff.

He had been detained on Sunday for investigation.

Kim had no health problems following the attempt, Shin said.

Kim is among top officials who are facing investigations for their role in Yoon’s short-lived martial law order, which has sparked widespread fury in South Korea.

Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets calling for the president’s resignation or impeachment.

The Abu Dhabi T10 league has been marred by fixing charges and bans [Abu Dhabi Cricket]

Sunny Dhillon, a former assistant coach with Pune Devils franchise in the Abu Dhabi T10 league, has been banned from all forms of cricket for six years by the ICC. It was found that Dhillon breached the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) Anti-Corruption Code.

Dhillon was among eight individuals charged last year, including Bangladesh allrounder Nasir Hossain, for breaching the anti-corruption code during the Abu Dhabi T10 in 2021 for alleged attempts to influence the outcome of matches during the tournament. The others charged at the time also included two of Pune Devils’ co-owners (Krishan Kumar Chaudhary and Parag Sanghvi), two domestic players, their batting coach (Ashar Zaidi) and team manager Shadab Ahamed.

While Hossain was banned in January this year for two years, Zaidi, Sanghavi and Choudhary were handed bans in August 2024, after they admitted to corrupt activities and breaching the ECB anti-corruption code.

“These efforts were disrupted by the ICC and the Designated Anti-Corruption Official (DACO) for the purposes of the ECB’s Code for the tournament,” an ICC release said. After a full hearing and presentation of written as well as oral argument, Dhillon was found guilty of:

  • Article 2.1.1 – Being party to an attempt to fix, contrive or influence improperly matches or aspects of matches in the Abu Dhabi T10 2021.
  • Article 2.4.4 – Failing to disclose to the DACO full details of any approaches or invitations received to engage in Corrupt Conduct under the Code.
  • Article 2.4.6 – Failing or refusing, without compelling justification, to cooperate with any investigation carried out by the DACO in relation to possible Corrupt Conduct under the Code.

Dhillon’s ban has been back-dated to September 13, 2023, the date he was provisionally suspended.

The 2021 edition was the last time Devils were part of the tournament. They finished last with just one win in six matches.

The economic crisis encountered by Sri Lanka during the previous 04 years has severely affected the small and medium sector entrepreneurs, and it has been reported that difficulties have arisen in settling the loans obtained from banks.

As a consequence, public auctioning of these properties have been temporarily terminated until 15-12-2024 through the amendments made to the Recovery of Loans by Banks (Special Provisions) Act, No. 4 of 1990.
