55th anniversary of Vietnam-Sri Lanka diplomatic relations

To mark the 55th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Vietnam, a press conference was held at the Embassy of Vietnam in Sri Lanka to markthis event. Chairing the event, Ambassador to Sri Lanka Ms. Trinh Thi Tam briefed the participants on the key milestones in the relations between the two countries.
The activities will encompass all pillars of bilateral relations including political economic and cultural diplomacy.
She also shared her willingness to share Vietnam’s expertise in agriculture, tourism and investment promotion with Sri Lanka. “I had meetings with the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, PM Harini Amarasuriya and many others regarding ongoing and upcoming development projects in Sri Lanka with Vietnam’s support. The two countries have supported each other at international forums,especially the United Nations,the Non Aligned movement and the ASEAN regional forum said the ambassador.
The Ambassador reaffirmed Vietnam’s continued support for Sri Lanka and praised the interest of Sri Lankan businessmen in connection with Vietnam, particularly in sectors like electric vehicles, coffee coconut shells and fertilizers.
She also said as both countries look forward to strengthen their partnership in the 55th Anniversary of diplomatic relations this year
Sri Lanka remains a vital market and partner for Vietnam said the Ambassador of Vietnam to Sri Lanka.
She afirmed that Vietnam and Sri Lanka have seen notable progress in their relations after the establishment of diplomatic ties, especially in diplomacy, trade, investment, labour and tourism.
At the Press Conference the Ambassador also highlighted the robust development of bilateral relations over the recent past. The two countries will celebrate the 55th Anniversary with a grand reception. She detailed the line up of events planned to commemorate the anniversary.
The Embassy o has planned a series of commemorative activities throughout the year 2025. The activities will encompass all pillars of bilateral relations, including political, economic, and cultural diplomacy, as well as people-to-people exchanges, aimed at raising awareness about the traditional friendship, to deepen mutual understanding and the existing fine collaboration between Viet Nam and Sri Lanka. Activities and events include: At the press conference, the embassy launched the logo design contest on the bilateral ties,running from march to May, and also introduced a song praising the relationship between the countries composed by a Sri lankan musician Mohamed Iqbal.

Events
There will be high level visits and meetings as well as meetings of bilateral cooperation between high-level leaders of Viet Nam and Sri Lanka to reinforce and promote relations between the two nations: A bilateral meeting between Viet Nam Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and the Sri Lankan President, Anura Kumara Dissanayake took place on the side-lines of the World Governments Summit in Dubai in February 2025. A joint stamp is set to be released featuring important landmarks, A vietamese film week and a Vietnamese cuisine week are some of events to be held to mark the bilateral relations over the past 55 years.
Ongoing arrangements are also made for the possibility of: a delegation from Viet Nam’s National Assembly to visit Sri Lanka in March or April 2025, a delegation from Sri Lanka to attend the 20th UN Day of Vesak hosted by Viet Nam in May 2025and other delegations at Minister, Deputy Minister level.
To raise awareness about President Ho Chi Minh and Viet Nam, the Embassy, in partnership with the Sri Lanka – Viet Nam Solidarity Association, will organize an essay-writing contest on the life and career of President Ho Chi Minh, especially among younger generations of Sri Lanka, and a commemorative event at his Statue at the Colombo Library.
Also in the pipeline is the naming of a street in Colombo after President Ho Chi Minh , this is to honour President Ho Chi Minh in Sri Lanka, in addition to his statue placed at the Library of Colombo.
After the press conference, participants enjoyed the taste of Vietnamese dishes prepaid by a Vietnamese restaurent in Colombo. The participants also viewed a collection of photographs on Vietnam,and Vietnam- Sri Lanka relationship.
