Workers’ remittances up 11.3 % in first half of 2024

Workers’ remittances saw an increase of 11.3 percent during the first half of 2024 compared to the corresponding period of 2023, a State Minister said on Thursday.
State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said in a statement that Sri Lanka received remittances amounting to 2.8 billion U.S. dollars during the first half of 2023 and it increased to over 3.1 billion dollars during the same period of 2024.
According to the State Minister, tourism earnings amounted to 1.56 billion dollars during the first half of 2024, compared to 875 million dollars earned during the same period of 2023.
Tourism and workers’ remittances are among Sri Lanka’s top foreign revenue earners.
Sri Lanka’s external sector performance in the first half of 2024 remained positive, with higher inflows in the form of workers’ remittances and earnings from tourism, despite a slightly higher trade deficit, said the country’s Central Bank in its latest press release.

LG polls ballot paper printing commences

Chairman of the Election Commission (EC) R.M.A.L. Ratnayake said that the printing of ballot papers for the May 06 Local Government (LG) elections had commenced yesterday (23).
Ratnayake said that ballot papers had been sent for printing, based on the details received from the District Secretariats, as per the established procedure.
The EC introduced a new mobile App on Saturday (22) to facilitate the filing of complaints related to LG elections.
The EC App enables the public to submit election-related complaints fast.
Chairman Ratnayake said, “Complaints can be made via this App and users can track the status of their complaints. The App also allows users to submit video and photo evidence to support their claims.”
This initiative aims to enhance transparency and efficiency in addressing election-related concerns.

PHIs complain of imposters tarnishing their image

General Secretary of the Public Health Inspectors’ Union, Chamil Mutukuda, has warned the public of a racket where some individuals are posing as PHIs and obtaining money from businesspersons. He has said the imposters are tarnishing the image of the PHIs.
Mutukuda has urged people to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to such fraudsters.
Mutukuda urged businessmen not to fall prey to such scams and report any such incidents to the relevant authorities.
He also noted that market raids for the festive season are set to begin today (24).

Nightclub brawl: Police looking for Yositha’s associates

Police have identified three suspects linked to a brawl involving a group accompanying Yoshitha Rajapaksa at a nightclub in Union Place, Colombo.
The incident, which took place on Saturday night (22), led to an assault on a security guard.
Police said that the incident had occurred between the nightclub’s security personnel and members of Yoshitha Rajapaksa’s group. It turned violent, leaving the security guard injured. He has since been admitted to a private hospital in Colombo for treatment.
Investigations have revealed that the suspects are residents of Dehiwala, Attidiya, and Thimbirigasyaya. They are believed to have fled following the incident.Police have deployed several teams to apprehend the suspects.
