US organization to donate Rs. 2.7 Bn worth medicines to Lanka

Heart to Heart International, a global humanitarian organization in Washington has obtained all necessary government approvals for the donation of urgent medical aid, worth an approximate USD 7,270,756.31 ( LKR 2.7 billion), to the people of Sri Lanka, under the guidance of Sri Lanka Ambassador to the USA Mahinda Samarasinghe

The latest donation includes an extensive volume of urgent medicines such as: Propranolol Hydrochloride and Labetalol HCL to treat high blood pressure and other heart problems; Potassium Chloride to treat low levels of potassium in the body; Quetiapine Fumarate to treat certain mental/mood conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorders etc.; and Allopurinol to decrease high blood uric acid levels and prevent gout (a form of arthritis).

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington D.C. said it is eternally grateful to Heart to Heart International for the generous donations that have been extended to the people of Sri Lanka at this critical juncture. In coordination with the Ministry of Health in Sri Lanka and this Embassy, the third donation is due to reach Colombo, Sri Lanka, via air on 29 December 2022.

Similar to former donations, all expenses will be borne by Heart to Heart International, and the Ministry of Health will receive the donation for immediate distribution at no cost to the people of Sri Lanka, it said in a statement.Thus far, the total in-kind donation provided by Heart to Heart International to the people of Sri Lanka is worth an approximate total of $19,915,909.38 USD (i.e., LKR 7.4 billion).

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Power and Energy on the recommendation of the Ministry of Tourism and Lands, to acquire 219.72 hectares of land in Siyambalanduwa Divisional Secretariat Division of Monaragala District and lease the relevant extent of land on a long-term lease basis for a period of 25 years to the Sustainable Energy Authority, with relevant provisions to enable sub-leasing to a selected renewable energy developer.

Chemicals to be regulated to prevent misuse

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by the  President in his capacity as the Minister of Defense to make arrangements to regulate  chemicals that could be misused, and to transfer the said regulatory role to the National Authority for the Implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Among the large number of different chemicals that are used in the country for peaceful purposes such as industrial, agricultural, medical and research activities it has been observed that among those chemicals, chemicals like Nitric acid, Chlorine, Hydrogen Peroxide, Potassium Cyanide, sodium cyanide, Nitro Methane and Sodium Azide are of dual use nature which can be used in many different industries such as milk, beverages, oil-related industries, water purification etc. can be used for harmful activities that threaten national security.
