UN Resident Coordinator calls on President Dissanayake

The United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka Marc-André Franche met with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Thursday (03) at the Presidential Secretariat.

During the meeting, the UN Resident Coordinator conveyed the warm greetings of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to President Dissanayake and praised the President’s manifesto and  ethical nature of his political campaign.

The Resident Coordinator acknowledged that the coming period will be challenging as public expectations are high, but assured the UN’s support for Sri Lanka’s IMF programme and the government’s poverty eradication efforts. He also lauded the anti-corruption initiative outlined in the President’s manifesto, noting that it offers hope for a new beginning. He assured technical and financial support from the UN to aid in these efforts.

Weekly gem fair in Kandy

A group of small-scale gem merchants from the Central Region has taken steps to establish and maintain a new gem market in the Kandy city.

The gem fair is held every Sunday at the upper floor of the George E. de Silva Shopping Complex in Kandy. This initiative provides a dedicated platform for small-scale traders and miners to conduct their business.

A large number of small-scale gem merchants travel from various parts of the country to participate in this weekly market.

Currently operating only on Sundays, the organisers aim to expand the fair into a daily market in the near future. Speaking on behalf of the merchants, Premraj Muthukumara stated that they were seeking support and cooperation of the Kandy Municipal Council and other relevant government institutions to make this a permanent daily fixture in the city.

SC rules no necessity to deliver a formal determination on the “Protection of Occupants” and “Rent Repeal” Bills

Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne yesterday (17) informed Parliament that the Supreme Court has ruled there is no necessity to deliver a formal determination on the “Protection of Occupants” and “Rent Repeal” Bills, which had been challenged under Article 121(1) of the Constitution.

He said the ruling followed an undertaking given to the Attorney General by the Secretary to the Ministry of Justice on February 6 that the proposed legislation would not proceed in its present form.

The Bills are instead to be referred to an expert committee for review and will subsequently be reintroduced as fresh legislation.

Coordinated operation nabs suspect with 2000 foreign fags

The Sri Lanka Navy, in coordination with the Colombo Harbour Police, conducted a joint search operation at the port on 16 Feb 26, leading to the arrest of one suspect and the recovery of a stock of 2000 foreign cigarettes.

The search, mounted by SLNS Rangalla belonging to the Western Naval Command with the assistance of the Colombo Harbour Police, led to the arrest of the suspect in possession contraband intended for sale.

The suspect was identified as a resident of Padukka area. He along with the foreign fags was handed over to the Colombo Harbour Police for legal action.
