Tourism earnings buoyant raking in over USD 160 million a month so far this year

The country earned 166.5 million U.S. dollars from tourism last month, Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) Chairman Priyantha Fernando told journalists in Colombo on Monday.

He said that Sri Lanka’s tourism revenue has exceeded 160 million dollars a month from January 2023.

In the first four months of 2023, Sri Lanka has earned 696.3 million dollars from tourism, Fernando said.

This is an increase of 17.8 percent compared to the same period last year, he said.

Fernando told the media, in April, the tourism industry was aiming to attract two million visitors in 2023, an increase from the previous target of 1.5 million.

He said the SLTDA amended the estimates upward due to a positive trend in the first quarter of the year.

Heat Index at ‘Caution’ level in Northern and North-Western provinces and Anuradhapura district

Heat Index advisory issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre At 4.00 p.m. 12 April 2024, valid for 13 April  2024

The Natural hazards Early Warning Centre says that the Heat Index, the temperature felt on the human body is expected to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in Northern and North-Western provinces and Anuradhapura district.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.

Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED

Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.
