Special Weather Bulletin issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 04.00 p.m. 22nd November 2024 for the period until 04.00 p.m. 23rd November 2024 for the land and the sea areas around the island
The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology has warned that a low-pressure area is likely to form over southeast Bay of Bengal today [23rd November].
Thereafter, it is likely to intensify into a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal during the next 2 days. The system may intensify further and move near the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka.
The general public are requested to be attentive to future forecasts and bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.
Advisories: For Sea Area
Under the influence of aforementioned system, from 24th November to 28th November;
The deep and shallow sea areas off the coasts extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee and Batticaloa will be very rough to high as the wind speed can be increased up to (60-70) kmph at times.
Naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture to the above sea areas from 24th November 2024 until further notice.

At least one person killed, several injured, after earthquake hits Peru

At least one person has been killed, and five others injured after a 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit Peru and was felt throughout the capital, Lima.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said on Sunday that the earthquake occurred at 11:35am (16:35 GMT) local time in the Pacific Ocean, with its epicentre located 23km (14 miles) southwest of Callao, a port city west of the capital Lima.
The Peruvian presidency reported that the magnitude of the earthquake was higher than the USGS assessment, registering a 6.1 magnitude. The earthquake did not generate a tsunami warning.
In a post on X, the presidency said that President Dina Boluarte was currently travelling to Callao to monitor the coast following the tremor.
Police Colonel Ramiro Clauco told the Peruvian broadcaster RPP radio that a 36-year-old man died in northern Lima while “standing outside his vehicle waiting for a passenger”.
The Emergency Operations Centre added that five people were being treated in the hospital and damage had been reported to roads and educational centres.

Air India plane crash death toll rises to 270

Doctors in India say 270 bodies have been recovered from the site of Thursday’s plane crash in Ahmedabad.
The London-bound aircraft crashed into a residential area shortly after take-off killing all but one of the 242 passengers and crew members, a 40-year-old British man.
Officials have also been trying to establish how many people were killed on the ground and have been continuing the slow process of matching DNA samples to confirm the victims’ identities.
Vigils honouring the dead have taken place across India and the UK.

Iran warns it will target UK, US and French bases in region if they help defend Israel

Iran warns the UK, US and France it will target their bases and ships in the region if they help stop the strikes on Israel, according to state media report.
Iranian state media has reported that 60 people, including 20 children, have been killed in an Israeli strike on Friday on a residential building in Tehran.
Israel has said it is targeting Iranian military sites, including nuclear facilities.
The latest official death toll we received from Iran was on Friday – when the country’s representative to the UN Security Council said 78 had been killed during Israeli strikes.
It’s not clear if the 60 people reported today are included in the previous number, and the BBC has not independently verified the figures.
