South-west monsoon has established over the island

The Department of Meteorology reported that the South-west monsoon has established over the island. The southwest monsoon generally begins in end May or early June and fade away by the end of September.

Landslide Early Warnings issued to Galle, Hambantota, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Matara and Ratnapura Districts

The Landslide Early Warning Center of the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued land slide early warnings to Galle, Hambantota, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Matara and Ratnapura Districts.
Accordingly, Level II landslide early warnings have been issued to the Divisional Secretaries Divisions and surrounding areas of of Neluwa in the Galle district, Ingiriya in the Kalutara district, Pasbage Korale in the Kandy district, Kotapola and Pitabeddara in the Matara district and Ayagama, Pelmadulla, Kuruwita, Kalawana, Eheliyagoda, Kiriella, Ratnapura, Elapatha and Nivithigala in the Ratnapura district.
Level I landslide warnings have been issued to the Divisional Secretaries Divisions and surrounding areas of Elpitiya in the Galle district, Walasmulla in the Hambanthota district, Aggalawaththa, Wallawita, Mathugama and Bulathsinhala in the Kalutara district, Ruwanwella, Dehiowita, Kegalle, Deraniyagala and Yatiyanthota in the Kegalle district, Mulatiyana and Athureliya in the Matara district and Imbulpe and Kolonna in the Ratnapura district.

Showers above 50mm at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle, Matara and Puttalam districts

The prevailing showery condition in south-western part of the Island is expected to continue further.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Fairly heavy showers above 50mm can be expected at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle, Matara and Puttalam districts while a few showers will occur in Northern province and in Anuradhapura district. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the evening or night
Winds will be south-westerly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph. Fairly strong winds about (40-45) kmph can be expected at times in western slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee and Hambantota districts. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo, Galle and Matara and up to (50-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai and Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil.
The sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil can be rough at times while the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo, Galle and Matara will be fairly rough at times.
General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
