By Saman Indrajith
Main Opposition SJB yesterday (03) submitted two separate no-confidence motions against the government and the President yesterday.
Chief Opposition Whip and SJB Kandy District MP Lakshman Kiriella said the motions had been handed over to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
Kiriella said Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Imtiaz Bakeer Marker, Eran Wickremaratne, Gayantha Karunathilake had been present when the motions were handed over to the Speaker.
“As per the Constitution the President is responsible to Parliament and he is also bound to take actions within his power to provide food, clothing, and shelter to the people. He has failed to do so. The House has lost confidence in him,” he said.
Parliament sources said that the motion against the President was not legally binding, and he would not be required to resign even if the motion is passed.
