Showery condition in the South-western part of the country is expected to be enhanced in the next few days from tomorrow (12 July).
Several spells of showers will occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Eastern and Uva provinces in the evening or night.
Strong winds of about (40-50) kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee, Hambantota and Monaragala districts.
Winds will be westerly to south-westerly in the sea areas around the island. The wind speed will be (30-40) kmph and it can increase up to (50-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai and Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. The wind speed will be (25-35) kmph in the other sea areas around the island.
The sea areas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai and Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be rough at times while the other sea areas around the island will be moderate. Strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Landslide early warnings issued to the Districts of Galle, Kalutara, Kegalle and Matara
The Landslide Early Warning Centre of the National Building Research Organization [NBRO] has issued landslide early warnings to the Districts of Galle, Kalutara, Kegalle and Matara effective from 09.30am today till 09.30am on 8th October 2024.
Accordingly,
Level II landslide early warnings have been issued to the divisional secretaries divisions and surrounding areas of Nagoda and Elpitiya in the Galle district and Wallallawita in the Kalutara district.
Level I landslide early warnings have been issued to the divisional secretaries divisions and surrounding areas of Niyagama in the Galle district, Dehiowita in the Kegalle district and Pitabeddara in the Matara district.

The Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (where winds from the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere converge) is affecting the island’s weather.
Showers or thundershowers will occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Galle, Matara, Mannar and Mullaittivu districts during the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur at most places in the island during the afternoon or night. Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places.
Winds will be South-westerly in direction in the sea areas and wind speed will be (25-35) kmph. Wind speed can increase up to (40-45) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Mannar to Hambanthota via Colombo and Galle.
The sea areas around the island can be slight to moderate. while the sea areas off the coasts extending from Mannar to Hambanthota via Colombo and Galle can be fairly rough at times. Strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

The atmospheric conditions are getting favorable for afternoon thundershowers in most parts of the island from today (06).
Showers may occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Northern and North-western provinces and in Galle, Matara and Trincomalee districts during the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur at most places in the island during the afternoon or night.
Fairly heavy showers about 75mm are likely at some places in Northern, North-central, Eastern and Uva province.
Winds will be South-westerly in the sea areas around the island and wind speed will be (25-35) kmph. Wind speed can increase up to (45-50) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Hambanthota to Pottuvil.
The sea areas around the island can be slight to moderate while the sea areas off the coasts extending from Hambanthota to Pottuvil can be fairly rough at times. Strong usty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
