Sajith says govt lying about there being no money to hold polls after having printed Rs 278 bn in three months

The government has printed 278 billion rupees in the last few months of 2022, therefore to state that there is no money for elections is absurd, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said in parliament on Thursday.
“The government printed 278 billion rupees between October and December 2022. We only need 10 billion for elections,” he said.
Rs 10 billion amounts to also less than a day’s government expenses.
“The government has tried to derail the local council elections 22 times. And to hide certain things they did, the most senior government members have lied in Parliament,” he said.
