President Ranil Wickremesinghe had created a “new normal” by crushing the purchasing power of the people, Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa said yesterday in Kandy following a meeting with Buddhist leaders.

Premadasa said that inflation had been reduced by crushing the purchasing power of the people.

“This new normal is not sustainable. People are suffering. No investments are being made. An SJB government will change that. We will improve the living standards of the people,” he said.

Premadasa added that the Wickremesinghe administration had been issuing bar licences to party supporters. (RK)

NR condemns UK, reiterates war was against terrorism not Tamil community

Namal

Condemning the British action, SLPP National Organiser Namal Rajapaksa, MP, has urged the Tamil community not to fall for the agenda of certain Tamil politicians who received perks to fuel divisions between communities through certain INGOs.

The text of statement issued by MP Rajapakasa: “Sri Lanka was the first nation to fully defeat terrorism, yet the West continues to selectively target our war veterans while ignoring those who funded and justified LTTE brutality. The latest UK sanctions aren’t about human rights—they’re the result of relentless LTTE-backed lobbying, manipulating foreign governments to act against those who brought lasting peace.

This is not justice; some Western politicians are enjoying the perks of lobbying money, putting our nation’s reconciliation at risk. People from both the North and South must understand that the freedom we enjoy today comes from tough decisions. These sanctions will lower the morale of our forces, and if another crisis arises, they may lack the courage to fight if we don’t support them now.

Those behind these sanctions don’t care about the safety of the Tamil community—they are only creating more problems and further jeopardizing reconciliation. Their real goal is to disrupt the progress made, especially as Tamil communities in the North and East now have a clear path to vote for national parties. We will never allow anyone to hamper reconciliation between communities.

I want to reiterate once again — the war was against terrorism, not against any ethnic group. I urge the Tamil community not to fall for the agenda of certain Tamil politicians who receive perks to fuel divisions between communities through certain INGOs.

Sarath

Former Navy Chief of Staff and ex-Public Security Minister Rear Admiral (Retd.) Sarath Weerasekera flayed the UK government over sanctions imposed on top military personnel and ex-LTTE military leader Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, alias Karuna Amman, who rebelled against Prabhakaran’s autocratic rule.

The text of Weerasekera’s statement: ” We outrightly condemn the British Government action regarding sanctions imposed on SL Army/ Navy Generals and Admirals.

This is a clear violation of Additional Protocol II of the Common Article 3 of the Geneva Convention which clearly mentions the Penal Prosecution procedure dealing with prosecuting any “suspect”.

The former British PM Theresa May has said “I would even go to the extent of amending the Human Right laws when it comes to the protection of my soldiers fighting terrorism.”

It’s a known fact that the British Government is harbouring the most wanted LTTE terrorists, including Adele Balasingham, who trained the LTTE suicide female cadres.

SL had defeated the “most ruthless terrorist organisation in the world”, and the British government, through this act, had let down her entire nation and her policy in fighting terrorists, for “Votes” and “Funds” of the separatists Tamil International Network, based in London.”
