Russia threatens to destroy Ukraine jets after Poland and Slovakia pledges

BBC reported that Russia has threatened to destroy any fighter jets given to Ukraine by its allies, after two countries promised planes.

Slovakia became the second Nato country to pledge Kyiv some MiG-29 aircraft on Friday, a day after Poland. Slovakia’s fleet was grounded last year and it no longer uses the jets.

Ukraine has asked Western countries for modern jets, but because of long training times, these are seen only as long-term options. It sees extra aircraft as important for its defences and possible counter-attacks, a year into Russia’s invasion.

Other Nato countries are considering sending planes such as the MiG-29 – a model which dates from the time of the Soviet Union – which Ukrainian pilots are trained to fly.

Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed Defence Minister Yoav Gallant (PIC BBC)

BBC reported that Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has been sacked by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after calling for the scrapping of controversial plans to overhaul the justice system.

Netanyahu summoned  Gallant to a meeting and told him he no longer had faith in him as defence minister. The plan to limit the powers of the judiciary led to months of protests. Tens of thousands of protestors returned to the streets on Sunday night following Mr Gallant’s dismissal.

The leaders of the protest accuse Netanyahu of behaving like a dictator and destroying the security of Israel.

US Vice President Kamala Harris in Africa to boost ties

Vice President Kamala Harris has said that the United States will increase investment in Africa and help spur economic growth as she began a week-long tour of the continent aimed at countering the influence of rivals Russia and China.

China has invested heavily in Africa in recent decades, including in infrastructure and resource development, while Russian influence has also grown, including through the deployment of troops from the private military contractor Wagner Group in several countries.

Mississippi tornado kills 24 and brings devastation to US state

BBC reported that Search and rescue efforts are under way after one of the deadliest tornadoes to have ever hit the US state of Mississippi.

At least 24 people have died following Friday night’s tornado, with more thought to be trapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings. The twister caused devastation in several rural towns, tearing down trees and power lines.Several southern states are also braced for powerful storms.

The storm system which ripped through Mississippi produced a tornado that has caused catastrophic damage to communities across the state. The biggest twister obliterated dozens of buildings in several small towns, flipping cars on their sides and toppling power lines.

One of those small towns, Rolling Fork, located in Sharkey County in western Mississippi, has essentially been wiped out, according to its mayor.
