Richmond favourites against Bens as semi-finals start

The semi-finals of the Under 19 Division I Tier ‘A’ cricket tournament will commence with St. Benedict’s taking on Richmond, the finalists of the last tournament at Thurstan College ground today.

Richmond are the firm favourities at the bottom semi-final against a team that reached the knockout stage after concluding their first-round matches as group runner-up.

Richmond captained by Tharinda Nirmal registered eight victories as they maintained an unbeaten record to reach the knockout stage as champions of the group.

The other semi-final between arch-rivals Trinity and St. Anthony’s will be played at the same venue on Monday.

Richmond knocked out defending champions St. Joseph’s to reach the semi-final. The quarter-final between St. Benedict’s and Maliyadeva was hampered by rain and the Bens reached the semi-final by virtue of maintaining a higher average of points in the first round than Maliyadeva.

St. Benedict’s are captained by Chamath Chathurya.

It's official: Scotland will replace Bangladesh in the 2026 T20 World Cup (Cricbuzz)

It is now official: Scotland have replaced Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2026 starting in India and Sri Lanka on February 7. It was always inevitable, after the International Cricket Council (ICC) gave the Bangladesh Cricket Boarda 24 hour deadline a couple of days back and on Saturday (January 24) it finally cracked the whip.

It was only a matter of time before Bangladesh was replaced by the Associate country from the northwestern European country in the British isles and the final call was taken on Saturday morning when it is learnt that the ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta formally wrote to the ICC Board that the demands of Bangladesh were not in order with the ICC policy.

In the letter, marked to all the members of the Board, Gupta is believed to have mentioned that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was not complying with the ICC Board’s decision and that there was no other way than to invite another country, Scotland in this case, in place of Bangladesh for the marquee event. The copy, naturally, has been marked to Aminul Islam, the BCB president, who is a member of the ICC Board.

Simultaneously, Gupta is understood to have also written to Cricket Scotland sending them the formal invite to take part in the championship to be played in India and Sri Lanka. Cricbuzz reached out to Cricket Scotland CEO Trudy Lindblade. There was no immediate response from her at the time of writing this report but this website understands that hotlines between Dubai and Edinburgh started opening on Saturday morning.

Scotland have been handed a berth in the World Cup based on their performances in the previous ICC events apart from their current ranking, which is No 14. In the previous edition of the World Cup in 2024, they had finished third in Group B, same points as England, but lost out on NRR. In 2022, they had beaten West Indies in the group stage, but finished third and thus failed to qualify for Super 12. In 2021, they had beaten, incidentally the team they are now replacing – Bangladesh – in the group stage and topped their group. However, they went winless in the Super 12 round.

The swap means Scotland will now be placed in Group C in the preliminary stage of the competition and will play against West Indies (February 7), Italy (February 9) and England (February 14) in Kolkata, before travelling west to take on Nepal in Mumbai on February 17.

Tanzid Hasan celebrates his century [Cricinfo]

Tanzid Hasan’s century propelled Rajshahi Warriors to their first BPL trophy, after they beat Chattogram Royals by 63 runs in the final.

Tanzid became the third batter after Tamim Iqbal and Chris Gayle to score a century in the BPL final, helping Rajshahi to a competitive 174 for 4 after batting first.

Chattogram, the underdog side of the tournament which came good despite not having a proper team owner, were bowled out for 111 runs in 17.5 overs. Sri Lanka fast bowler Binura Fernando took four wickets, and left-arm spinner Hasan Murad took three wickets.

It was Rajshahi’s batting that set the tone for the win. They got an early boost when openers Tanzid and Sahibzada Farhan added 83 runs for the first wicket in 10.2 overs. Farhan made a run-a-ball 30 with two fours and a six, but it was Tanzid who held Rajshahi’s innings together. He added 47 runs with Kane Williamson, before reaching his third T20 century, off 61 balls. Tanzid struck seven sixes and six fours, before falling for 100 in the penultimate over.

Shoriful Islam took his BPL tally to 26 wickets for the season with two wickets, while Mukidul Islam was Chattogram’s best bowler on the day, taking 2 for 20 from his four overs.

Fernando gave Rajshahi another good start with the ball, removing Mohammad Naim and Mahmudul Hasan Joy in the third over. He returned to remove Asif Ali and Shoriful Islam to finish with excellent figures of 4 for 9.

Murad then struck, first with the big wicket of Hassan Nawaz, followed by wickets of Chattogram captain Mahedi Hasan and Mirza Baig. Chattogram’s chase never really took off, as the rest of the Rajshahi bowlers took control after Murad’s four overs.
