Rainy conditions in most parts of the island today

Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 28 February 2023 by the Department of Meteorology

Rainy condition is expected to enhance to some extent over the island today.

Showers will occur at times in Eastern, Uva and North-Central provinces and in Mullaitivu and Matale districts. Fairly heavy showers above 75mm can be expected at some places in the Eastern and Uva provinces.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts during the afternoon or night. Fairly heavy showers above 50mm can be expected at some places in the above areas.

Several spells of showers may occur in the Northern Province.

Fairly strong gusty winds can be expected over Northern, North-Central, Central and North-Western provinces and in Trincomalee and Hambantota districts. Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph and may increase up to (50-55) kmph at times.

Sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Colombo via Puttalam and sea areas off the coast extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough at times. Other sea areas around the island will be fairly rough.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka is likely to develop into a low-pressure area around the next 36 hours. Therefore, the prevailing showery conditions over the island are expected to continue during the next few days.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in most parts of the island and Cloudy skies are expected, under the influence of the aforementioned system. Heavy showers about 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, Southern, North-western, Northern and North-central provinces and in Trincomalee district.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The Landslide Early Warning Center of the Building Research Organisation [NBRO| has issued Landslide Early Warnings to the Districts of Badulla and Moneragala valid upto 2130 hrs today [10th May 2026]

Accordingly,
Level I [Yellow] landslide early warnings have been issued to the Divisional Secretaries Divisions and surrounding areas of Passara in the Badulla district and Badalkumbura and Wellawaya in the Monaragala District.
