New Constitution: Karu J to comment on Prez declaration

Former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has called a media briefing at No 8/32 A, Wachissara Nahimi Mawatha, Kirulapona, today (14) to comment on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s recent declaration of his intention to enact a new Constitution. One-time UNP Deputy Leader, Jayasuriya is the Chairman of the National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) formed by the late Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera.

SLPP National List MP and Chairman of Yuthukama civil society group Gevindu Kumaratunga recently said that those who voted for the SLPP at the 2019 presidential and 2020 parliamentary polls expected President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to unveil the draft Constitution ahead of the second anniversary of his victory at the Nov 16, 2019 presidential poll.

During his address at the ‘2023/2024 National Law Conference’ held at the Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the majority of the population, including the youth lacked trust  in elections and politics .

The President further emphasized that while the re-establishment of law and order, as well as political and economic stability, is crucial, it does not imply that Sri Lanka has completely overcome the crisis. He emphasized the necessity of making significant commitments in the future to ensure the success of the entire process.
