Navy and STF nab suspect in possession of explosives in China Bay

A coordinated operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy and the Police Special Task Force (STF) in the China Bay area of Trincomalee in the dark hours of 06th June  led to the apprehension of a suspect who was in possession of  95 gelignite sticks.

The use of explosives for fishing poses a serious threat to marine life and can cause long-lasting damage to the marine ecosystems. The suspect together with explosive items were handed over to the China Bay Police for onward legal action.

The Ministerial Consultative Committee on Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils & Local Government chaired by  Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena as well as the Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government  unanimously consented to cancel the nominations submitted for the Local Government Elections given that those who have submitted nominations have faced great difficulties due to the postponement of the elections.
