Let’s do it with Pumpkin…
Hi! This week I’m giving you some very simple, very easy to make, and very easy to apply, beauty tips.
* Body Sugar Scrub:
Mix together equal parts pumpkin puree and olive oil and add enough sugar until you have a thick semi-liquid mixture. In the shower gently rub all over with a washcloth, or loofah bath sponge, rinse, and then dry as usual.
* Body Butter:
Mix equal parts pumpkin puree and coconut oil and slather all over, in the shower, and go about your shower business. Rinse off before you step out. Dry yourself gently … and enjoy your soft skin.
* Generic Face Mask:
Mix together one cup of pumpkin, two tablespoons of brown sugar, one tablespoon of honey and a half cup of yoghurt. Spread on to your face and let sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water, and pat dry.
* Face Mask for Oily Skin:
Combine 1/4 cup pumpkin puree with 01 tablespoon apple cider vinegar and a whole egg. Mix the ingredients until smooth and apply to face. Leave on for 20 minutes, rinse, and pat dry.
* Facial Mask for Dry Skin:
Combine 1/4 cup pumpkin puree with 01 teaspoon olive oil, 01 teaspoon honey and a whole egg. Mix the ingredients until smooth and apply to face. Leave on for 20 minutes, rinse, and pat dry.
* Lip Balm/Scrub:
Mix 1/4 teaspoon of pumpkin puree with 1/4 teaspoon coconut oil and 1/2 teaspoon fine sugar. Rub on lips and massage gently … to exfoliate and moisturize.
* Hair ‘Lusterizer’:
For great shine and lusty luster, make a pumpkin hair mask by mixing together one cup of pumpkin with one-half cup plain yoghurt and one tablespoon of honey. Mush it into your scalp and out to the ends of your hair and wrap your head with a shower cap or towel; let sit for up to 30 minutes. Cleanse hair as usual.
* Pedicure Foot Wrap:
Combine 1/2 cup pumpkin puree with a whole egg and a teaspoon of honey. Massage into your feet and ankles and then wrap in plastic or throw on a pair of old socks. Let sit for 15 minutes before rinsing.
* Salt Foot Scrub:
Mix together 1/2 cup pumpkin puree with 02 tablespoons olive oil and enough salt to make a loose paste. Over a bowl or the tub, lump it on to your feet and massage well, paying special attention to heels and other dry areas. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.
* Hand Restoration Oil:
Mixing together 1/4 cup pumpkin puree with 01 teaspoon almond (or olive oil), and 01 teaspoon of honey. Massage the mixture into your hands, over the sink, for as long as it feels good, and then rinse with warm water.

Chef’s daughter cooking up a storm…
Don Sherman was quite a popular figure in the entertainment scene but now he is better known as the Singing Chef and that’s because he turns out some yummy dishes at his restaurant, in Rajagiriya.
However, now the spotlight is gradually focusing on his daughter Emma Shanaya who has turned out to be a very talented singer.
In fact, we have spotlighted her in The Island a couple of times and she is in the limelight, once gain.
When Emma released her debut music video, titled ‘You Made Me Feel,’ the feedback was very encouraging and at that point in time she said “I only want to keep doing bigger and greater things and ‘You Made Me Feel’ is the very first step to a long journey.”
Emma, who resides in Melbourne, Australia, is in Sri Lanka, at the moment, and has released her very first Sinhala single.
“I’m back in Sri Lanka with a brand new single and this time it’s a Sinhalese song … yes, my debut Sinhala song ‘Sanasum Mawana’ (Bloom like a Flower).
“This song is very special to me as I wrote the lyrics in English and then got it translated and re-written by my mother, and my amazing and very talented producer Thilina Boralessa. Thilina also composed the music, and mix and master of the track.”
Emma went on to say that instead of a love song, or a young romance, she wanted to give the Sri Lankan audience a debut song with some meaning and substance that will portray her, not only as an artiste, but as the person she is.
Says Emma: “‘Sanasum Mawana’ is about life, love and the essence of a woman. This song is for the special woman in your life, whether it be your mother, sister, friend, daughter or partner. I personally dedicate this song to my mother. I wouldn’t be where I am right now if it weren’t for her.”
On Friday, 30th January, ‘Sanasum Mawana’ went live on YouTube and all streaming platforms, and just before it went live, she went on to say, they had a wonderful and intimate launch event at her father’s institute/ restaurant, the ‘Don Sherman Institute’ in Rajagiriya.
It was an evening of celebration, good food and great vibes and the event was also an introduction to Emma Shanaya the person and artiste.
Emma also mentioned that she is Sri Lanka for an extended period – a “work holiday”.
“I would like to expand my creativity in Sri Lanka and see the opportunities the island has in store for me. I look forward to singing, modelling, and acting opportunities, and to work with some wonderful people.
“Thank you to everyone that is by my side, supporting me on this new and exciting journey. I can’t wait to bring you more and continue to bloom like a flower.”

Unavoidable circumstances …
The ‘ROCK meets REGGAE’ concert, scheduled for 28th February, has been rescheduled, due to unavoidable circumstances, as mentioned by Rohitha Jayalath, of JAYASRI fame, on social media: “We’ve rescheduled the event! New date coming soon. Refunds available ….”
Rock and reggae music fans were looking forward to this event as the lineup included Sri Lanka’s rock star Chitral Somapala, together with Black Majesty (from Australia) and the band JAYASRI.
The last ROCK meets REGGAE event was held in Colombo in 2019; in general, rock and reggae music fans have very little to look forward to in the scene here.
According to reports, Austria’s biggest Reggae Festival is coming up in August, this year – 7th and 8th August – with a very strong lineup, and JAYASRI is in the scene, as well.
Alpha Blondy, who did his thing in Colombo, last year, is also a part of the programme.

Ramadan 2026: Fasting hours around the world
The Muslim holy month of Ramadan is set to begin on February 18 or 19, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon.
During the month, which lasts 29 or 30 days, Muslims observing the fast will refrain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk, typically for a period of 12 to 15 hours, depending on their location.
Muslims believe Ramadan is the month when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad more than 1,400 years ago.
The fast entails abstinence from eating, drinking, smoking and sexual relations during daylight hours to achieve greater “taqwa”, or consciousness of God.
Why does Ramadan start on different dates every year?
Ramadan begins 10 to 12 days earlier each year. This is because the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar Hijri calendar, with months that are 29 or 30 days long.
For nearly 90 percent of the world’s population living in the Northern Hemisphere, the number of fasting hours will be a bit shorter this year and will continue to decrease until 2031, when Ramadan will encompass the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year.
For fasting Muslims living south of the equator, the number of fasting hours will be longer than last year.
Because the lunar year is shorter than the solar year by 11 days, Ramadan will be observed twice in the year 2030 – first beginning on January 5 and then starting on December 26.

Fasting hours around the world
The number of daylight hours varies across the world.
Since it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere, this Ramadan, people living there will have the shortest fasts, lasting about 12 to 13 hours on the first day, with the duration increasing throughout the month.
People in southern countries like Chile, New Zealand, and South Africa will have the longest fasts, lasting about 14 to 15 hours on the first day. However, the number of fasting hours will decrease throughout the month.
