Heavy showers about 100 mm are likely at some places in Eastern province and in Polonnaruwa and Mullaitivu districts

Further enhancement of showery condition is expected over the island due to the low-pressure area existing in the southeast Bay of Bengal.

Showers may occur in the Southern province during the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern, North-central and Eastern provinces. Heavy showers about 100 mm are likely at some places in the Eastern province and in Polonnaruwa and Mullaitivu districts. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in other provinces of the island after 01.00 p.m. Fairly heavy showers about 75 mm are likely at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Batticaloa to via Colombo, Puttalam, Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee. Wind speed may increase up to (60-70) kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Batticaloa via Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee.

Winds will be south-westerly or variable in direction in the other sea areas around the island and wind speed will be (20-30) kmph. 

The sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Batticaloa via Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee will be rough while the other sea areas around the Island may be fairly rough but temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Cloudy skies are expected over most parts of the island.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern, Eastern, North-central, Uva, Central and Southern provinces. Very heavy showers above 150 mm can be expected at some places in Eastern and Uva provinces and in Hambantota district and heavy showers above 100 mm can be expected at some places in Northern province and in Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, Polonnaruwa, Galle and Matara Districts.  Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere.

Fairly strong winds of (30-40) kmph can be expected at times over Eastern slope of the central hills and Northern, North-central, Eastern and North-western provinces and in Hambantota and Monaragala districts.

Winds will be north-easterly in the sea areas around Sri Lanka and speed will be (30-40) kmph. Wind speed can increase up to (50-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar while wind speed will increase up to 50 kmph at times in the other sea areas around the island.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar will be rough at times while other sea areas around the island will be fairly rough at times.

The swell waves height may increase (about 2.0 – 2.5 m) in the sea areas off the coast extending from Batticaloa to Hambanthota via Pottuvil. (this is not for land area). Strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Landslide early warnings issued to the district of Badulla , Kandy , Kurunegala and Matale

The National Building Research Organization [NBRO] has issued landslide early warnings to the districts of Badulla, Kandy, Kurunegala and Matale at 0800 hrs today valid until 0800hrs on Monday 20th January 2025.

Accordingly,

Level II [Amber] landslide early warnings have been issued to the Divisional Secretaries Divisions and surrounding areas of Ududumbara in the Kandy district and Rattota, Yatawatta, Ukuwela and Wilgamuwa in the Matale district.

Level I [Yellow] landslide early warnings have been issued to the Divisional Secretaries Divisions and surrounding areas of Badulla, Passara and Hali Ela in the Badulla district, Meda Dumbara, Phatha Dumbara and Doluwa in the Kandy district and Laggala Pallegama, Ambanganga Korale, Pallepola, Naula and Matale in the Matale district

Rainy condition is expected to continue further in Northern, North-central, Eastern,Uva and Central provinces.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern, Eastern, North-central, Uva, Central and Southern provinces. Very heavy showers above 150 mm can be expected at some places in Eastern and Uva provinces and in Hambantota district.  Heavy showers above 100 mm can be expected at some places in Northern province and in Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, Polonnaruwa, Galle and Matara Districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere.
