On Tuesday, the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to obtain the Government Analyst’s reports on various court productions related to the investigation into the death of businessman Dinesh Schaffter.

Colombo Additional Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya noted that the court had not yet received the analytical reports including one on several blood samples, from the Government Analyst.

The Additional Magistrate instructed the CID to take the necessary steps to obtain those reports from the Government Analyst.

The Additional Magistrate mentioned that if required, she could send a reminder to the Government Analyst regarding the pending reports.

The body of businessman Dinesh Shaffter was recently exhumed in the presence of a panel of medical experts appointed to conduct a fresh post-mortem inquiry in order to determine the cause of his death.

The Ministry has said the ongoing Iran-Israel war will not cause fuel shortage, contrary to social media reports. The Ministry has urged the general public not to be misled by false claims.

Committee probing IGP meets again

Three more witnesses testified, on Monday, before the Committee of Inquiry appointed to inquire and report its findings on Inspector General of Police T.M.W. Deshabandhu Tennakoon in respect of acts of gross abuse of power, according to a press release issued by Parliament.

The Committee, chaired by Supreme Court Judge P.P. Surasena and comprising Justice W.M.N.P. Iddawala and E.W.M. Lalith Ekanayake, Chairman, National Police Commission, convened at Parliament from 9.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m..

During previous sitting held on 11 June, four witnesses gave evidence before the Committee. However, the testimony of one witness could not be concluded on that day. Accordingly, the witness appeared today and concluded his testimony. In addition, three more witnesses gave and concluded their evidence on Tuesday.

During the proceedings, Additional Solicitor General (President’s Counsel) Dileepa Peiris and Deputy Solicitor General Rajitha Perera, representing the Attorney General’s Department, along with R.S. Weerawickrama, Attorney-at-Law, appearing on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, cross-examined the witnesses.

Seven witnesses have so far testified before the Committee. The Committee of Inquiry met yesterday (17).

Rs 30 bn allocated for special FD scheme for senior citizens

The government had allocated Rs 30 bn for the establishment of special fixed deposit scheme for senior citizens in line with the 2025 Budget proposal, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said yesterday (17).

The announcement was made at the post-Cabinet media briefing. The Minister said that the special scheme would be available for Sri Lankan citizens aged 60 years and above, for deposits made between July 1, 2025, and December 31, 2025.

The scheme would offer a 12-month deposit period with a maximum deposit limit of Rs. 1 million per individual and a 3% additional annual interest above the Average Weighted Fixed Deposit Rate (AWFDR) or the officially declared fixed deposit interest rate.
