Five students of British School in Colombo achieve World Class Maths results

Five students of the British School in Colombo (BSC) have proven their mettle as young mathematicians by securing an A* in IGCSE Maths from Cambridge Assessment International Education.

Described by the BSC as a “world record”, the high-flyers, Arun Sumathiratne, Mustafa Salman, Praveen Athauda-arachchi, Nathan Samuel and Senal Arsecularatne performed exceedingly well in a field that’s mind-boggling.

Three of the students achieved 98%, one 97% and the other 96%. All five of them are in the 11-12 years age group.

Speaking about the results, BSC Principal, Dr John Scarth said, “I have been working in schools around the world for nearly 40 years but I have never had such amazing results from young students. Occasionally, a gifted student achieves an A grade pass at IGCSE when they are 10 or 11 years old. Such results from young children are highly unusual and the student would be only one in the school.

“In our case we have five students all from Year 6 all achieve A*, and this is truly amazing. The boys have worked so hard and shown fantastic resilience in dealing with the difficulties of the pandemic and remaining focused on their studies”, he noted.

The students are now studying for their Advanced Level in mathematics and expect to complete it in June 2022.

They have won many coveted accolades earlier at SEAMO (Southeast Asian Mathematics Olympiad) and Waterloo University Canada Mathematics Competition.
