Despite drop in rainfall several rivers in spate

There had been a decrease in rainfall yesterday in most parts of the country, but water levels in Kelani Ganga -Hanwella area, Kuda Ganga, Maha Ganga and Attangala Oya were still rising, Irrigation Department Disaster Management and Director Hydrology, Eng. S.P.C. Sugeeshwara said.

The Disaster Management Centre said that nearly 1,500 people had been affected due to floods following torrential rains which wreaked havoc in eight districts.

Some 1,200 people families in the Sabaragamuwa, Uva, North Central, Eastern, North Eastern, Central and Western Provinces have been rendered destitute.

Three people were injured in Ratnapura and Kurunegala districts due to floods.

About 100 houses were partially damaged and two houses were destroyed by floods.

Minor floods were reported from several areas across the country.

Water levels of the Kelani, Kalu, Gin, Nilwala, and Mahaweli rivers and also Maha Oya and Attanagalu Oya have risen, the Department of Irrigation said.

The Irrigation Department has warned that there is a high risk of severe floods as the upstream catchment areas of the Maha Oya basin have received heavy rainfall.

The low-lying areas of the Maha Oya valley in the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Alawwa, Divulapitiya, Mirigama, Pannala, Wennappuwa, Negombo, Katana, Narammala and Dankotuwa have experienced minor flood conditions, says the Irrigation Department, warning that severe floods may occur in the said areas.

The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has said that there is a risk of landslides in 41 regional secretariat divisions in eight districts.

The Department of Meteorology yesterday said that showers would occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces and Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts.

Fairly heavy showers above 50mm may occur at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts.

Several spells of showers may occur in the Northern and North-central provinces.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Uva and Eastern province during the evening or night.

Landslide risk notices have been issued to 41 Divisional Secretariat divisions in Colombo, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura Districts. Red notices have been issued to 11divisional secretariat divisions in five districts–– Ududumbara in the Kandy District, Rambukkana, Ruwanwella Yatiyantota, Bulathkohupitiya and Mawanella in the Kegalle District, Mallawapitiya in Kurunegala district, Ambagamuwa in the Nuwara Eliya District and Kuruwita and Kalawana in the RatnapuraDistrict. In addition to this, a second level landslide warning has been issued to the divisional secretariat divisions of six other districts.

Meanwhile, the water level of the catchment areas of the Kelani river basin has risen due to continuous rainfall.

The Irrigation Department has cautioned that minor floods may occur in low-lying areas of the Divisional Secretariat areas of Dehiowita, Seethawaka, Deraniyagala, Dompe, Avissawella, Hanwella, Kaduwela, Biyagama, Kolonnawa, Colombo and Wattala.

SAARC journalists meet in New Delhi

Members of the South Asian Journalists Forum have gathered  at the University of  New Delhi for a two day conference themed ‘Peace and Co-operation’.

Journalists from Bangladesh,  Nepal, Sri Lanka and India are attending the conference hosted by the  University of Delhi in collaboration with the India Chapter of SJF, and  will deliberate on how the media can act as a catalyst for regional stability and mutual coexsistence.

A tree plantation campaign was also held at the Ghandi Bhawan premises of the University to mark the event and symbolize growing regional ties.

The Sri Lanka delegation is led by President of SJF’s Sri Lanka Chapter Rahul Samantha Hettiarachchi.

Governor of Gujarat met with Sri Lanka PM to discuss exposition of Devnimori Relics

The Governor of the of Gujarat,  Acharya Devvrat, along with the Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat,  Harsh Sanghvi, met with Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya on Thursdy [February 05]  at the Parliamentary Complex to discuss the arrangements related to the exposition of the Devnimori Sacred Relics of  Lord Buddha, which have been brought to Sri Lanka under the patronage of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India.

These sacred relics of  Lord Buddha were discovered during archaeological excavations conducted in the 1960s at the historic Devnimori site in Gujarat, the home state of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Until now, these relics had never been taken outside India. As a result of discussions held between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to Sri Lanka, the people of Sri Lanka have been granted this rare opportunity to venerate these sacred relics.

The exposition of the relics is being held for a period of seven days, from February 05 to February 11, at the Gangaramaya Temple in Hunupitiya, Colombo. Discussions were held between both parties regarding the arrangements related to this event.

The discussion was attended by Samar Nanda, Joint Secretary of the Indian Ministry of Culture; Dr. Satyanjal Pandey, Acting High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka;  Abhijit Halder, Director General of the International Buddhist Confederation; along with several others.

INS GHARIAL makes port call in Colombo

The Indian Naval Ship (INS) GHARIAL made a port call in Colombo for operational turnarounds on 04 Feb 26. The Sri Lanka Navy welcomed the visiting ship in compliance with naval traditions.

Commanded by Commander Gaurav Tewari, INS GHARIAL is a vessel with a length of 124.8 meters.

During this visit, ten (10) Bailey Bridges, brought by ship, through the coordination of the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka, will be handed over to the Disaster Management Center. These bridges will provide temporary transportation links while bridges damaged across the island by adverse weather conditions are repaired.

The crew’s itinerary features scheduled goodwill activities with the Sri Lanka Navy, alongside visits to several tourist attractions across the island.
