Coronavirus continues to set new records in the country

By Rathindra Kuruwita
The hitherto the highest number of COVID-19 cases in a single day of 3,793 had been reported on August 18, Deputy Director General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said yesterday. The previous highest number of daily cases was 3,676, which was reported on 17 August.
The highest number of daily deaths so far, 186, was recorded on Wednesday as well. Among them were four people under 30.
The Gampaha District General Hospital’s Consultant Respiratory Physician Dr. Bodhika Samarasekera said that COVID-19 cases with complications were rising. Most patients were having 20% lung capacity, he said.
“These people need oxygen. When the number of cases goes up, so does that of patients needing oxygen,” he said.
Dr. Samarasekera said that all patients who had received both jabs survived. “They didn’t even have to be in the ICU. So, it is really important that we get both vaccines. Moreover, those without symptoms and those with mild symptoms can stay at home and recover. However, they must be rushed to hospital if they face any respiratory issues. If they come without delay, we can save their lives,” he said.
Bandarawela Hospital started cremating the remains of COVID-19 patients piling up in its morgue. The morgue at the hospital was small and it did not have refrigerator facilities, hospital staff said.
