Chief Govt. whip decries opposition attempt to have 20A debate put off
Chief Government Whip Highways Minister Johnston Fernando yesterday said that those who had gone before the courts against the holding of a general election were now writing to the Speaker requesting the postponing of parliament sessions.
“Chief Opposition Whip has written to the Speaker, asking him to postpone parliament meetings. The reason he is citing is the spread of COVID-19. We have held many parliament meetings, passed many bills and held debates since the advent of the pan demic. We did all those according to health guidelines. So why this sudden urge to get parliament sittings postponed? This is another tactic to avoid their inevitable
defeat in the vote to be taken after the debate on the 20th amendment to the Constitution.”
“The bankrupt lot in the opposition is now seeking the closure of parliament. We would not let them shut down Parliament. A party leaders’ meeting was held last week and the agenda for the next sitting week has been approved. So, there would be no postponing of sittings.”
