Centenary of the Negombo Bharatha Association

The Negombo Bharatha Association launched its centenary celebrations at its Annual General Meeting on Sunday (27). The meeting was held at the Mary Croos Raj Chandra community hall which was an outright grant of this generous ancestor and benefactor of not only the Bharatha Association of Negombo but also other major projects in Negombo but also in several other areas of Sri Lanka.
The current President Gemunu Rodrigo and Secretary Ms. Himaya Fernando kindly consented to continue in office in the ensuing year. Most of the rest of the exco too will continue to hold office as this year is a very historic one in its annals.
A programme of events will be decided by the new exco. Apart from a traditional “Light Fantastic” the other events thus far considered are a festive High Mass at St. Mary’s Church, Grand Street Negombo which has been supported on numerous occasions by our ancestors and the current membership. A charitable event such as the colour washing of a couple of wards of the Negombo General Hospital, a donation to a Children’s Home and a Home for the Elders will also be undertaken.
In the present era of ethnic harmony, the Negombo Bharathas are officially categorized as “others”. However, they have been around for a century as an organization and have been a part of this land for a couple of centuries.

Hundreds fired at aviation safety agency, union says
The Trump administration has begun firing hundreds of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) employees, according to the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists (PASS) union, weeks after a fatal mid-air plane collision in Washington DC.
Several hundreds of the agency’s probationary workers – who have generally been in their positions for less than a year – received the news via email late on Friday night, a statement from PASS’s head, Alex Spero said.
It is a part of a cost-cutting drive, driven by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (Doge)., that aims to drastically cut the federal workforce.
Spero called the firings “shameful” and said they “will increase the workload and place new responsibilities on a workforce that is already stretched thin”.
