A CID team, led by an ASP, has commenced an investigation into a recent statement by former Governor of Western Province Azath Salley that he did not respect the laws of the country, Police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

DIG Rohana said that a number of groups had lodged complaints about Salley’s statement. The CID will also look at recordings of Salley’s statement.

Propaganda Secretary of the National Freedom Front (NFF) MP Mohamed Muzammil urged the IGP C. D. Wickramaratne to conduct a probe on Salley’s statement. Salley also said that he only respected Islamic laws.

Muzammil said that Salley’s statements posed a very serious threat to other communities in the country and to those who were against extremist views.

Muzammil said: “Azath Salley has called for separate laws. These claims will create more suicide bombers and will help followers of Zahran to pursue their narrow political interests. We believe that the Attorney General and the Police Department will take action against Azath Salley who is challenging the law of the land.”
