St. Peter’s rugby basks in the warmth of its sponsors
By A Special Sports Correspondent
The rugby players of St. Peter’s College Bambalapitiya could be a bit overwhelmed by the attention they get from sponsors this season because the Peterites could stake a claim to be the rugby playing school with the largest set of sponsors if a comparison were to be made with other teams and the sponsors backing them.
This school, which is riding a wave of immense success in the rugby scene, felicitated its sponsors at a gala ceremony held at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo on Tuesday (May 21). As many as seven top companies along with an individual have come forward to back this team in the capacity of either bronze, silver, principal, platinum or gold sponsor category.
The Peterites take the field this season as defending champions of both the league and knockout tournaments and the large number of sponsorships could certainly boost their confidence and performances on the field. The Peterires are led this season by hooker Dulaj Nawodya.
The Rector of St. Peter’s College, Rev. Fr. Rohitha Rodrigo, speaking at the event while thanking the sponsors said that the role of sport is to shape the character of players. “Our sports programmes in school have nurtured talent. Rugby is a primary sport at St. Peter’s with many achievements. The profound support of the sponsors will help shape the journeys of our players,” said Rev. Fr. Rodrigo.
The occasion was also used to unveil the new logo of St. Peter’s College rugby team. The wordings on logo read ‘Our legacy of passion and glory’.
Also present at the occasion were representatives of the St. Peter’s College Rugby Foundation, distinguished old boys and representatives of the sponsors. The event progressed smoothly thanks to the efforts of the Sponsorship Felicitation Committee which was headed by Dilshan Harin Perera. The vote of thanks was delivered by Samson Roy, the President of the St. Peter’s College Rugby Foundation.
